Wired is a magazine that covers the current and future trends in technology. They assign long-form print features (mostly 5,000 words) and long-form online features for the Backchannel section of their site (mostly 5,000 words) to contributors from outside their staff. They also assign a smaller number of freelance stories for their business, science, and service sections. Their rates for short “minifeatures” start at $3,000 and Backchannel features start at $1,000. Their rates for other short, online-only content start at $250. Business Insider is a website that covers business, financial, and technology news. Insider is a website that shares all the adventures that life has to offer. The news editor of Business Insider and Insider is accepting freelance pitches for news stories. He is especially seeking scoopy, ambitious stories and “anything that’s ‘hiding in plain sight’, or something you see going on in your community — locally or online — that should be elevated to national attention.” Pay is $200 to $800 per story. Vice Life Desk’s senior editor is accepting freelance pitches specifically about “relationships, sex, money, work, identity, and health,” and she always wants to read essays of all stripes. The Independent’s acting travel editor is accepting travel pitches from next week. She likes colorful, narrative stories that involve doing something that Independent Travel’s “readers might like to, and can afford to, do.” Their current focus is mainly the UK and also other countries in this list. Culture Trip is a startup that operates in travel, media, and entertainment. They inspire people to explore the culture and creativity of the world. They are “looking for wellness writers in the New England region (or those highly knowledgeable of wellness in the area) to pitch ideas for a new commission.” Payment reports indicate that they pay up to $0.33 per word. Toggl is a time tracking software for small businesses and freelancers. They cover productivity and time management related topics on their blog. They are looking for pitches for “reported pieces, explainers, feature stories, interviews and personal essays on work culture, workplace trends and technology, productivity hacks and time management.” They pay $150 to $250 for roundups, reviews, personal essays and interviews (length: 800 to 1,500 words), and $350 to $500 for longer researched and reported feature stories (length: 1,200 to 2,000 words). World Politics Review provides “uncompromising news and analysis on global affairs.” They are seeking a freelance writer to contribute the lead story (600-750 words) to their weekly China newsletter, China Note. The lead story “usually highlights a major news development from China, but can also look at other aspects of Chinese politics and society that may not be covered as widely in Western media.” According to their contributor guidelines, they pay a standard honorarium of $250 for briefings of 900 to 1,100 words.
