The Short Story Award is Back With a $38,000 Grand Prize!

There’s big news for the year’s biggest prize for a single short story: They’re back, this time with a new sponsor. Amazon owned Audible is sponsoring this year’s contest.

The grand prize? A whopping £30,000, which equals almost $38,000 USD. (Let’s hope, by the time the award happens, that the Pound Sterling isn’t severely affected by the tensions around Brexit. )

There will also be five shortlisted winners, who will each receive £2,000. That’s £1,000 for the award, plus another £1,000 for their story to be published by Audible.

That means the total prizes, fees, and awards equal £40,000, or over $50,000 USD.

For writers who are new to publishing in the UK, you may have to start by working on next year’s entry first: The primary requirement is that you’ve been published in the UK or Ireland at least once, with an established publication. So, if you haven’t yet been published there, the first step is to get that publication, then enter the contest next year.

For those authors ready to enter this year, the story must be no more than 6,000 words.

The deadline to enter is February 15th, 2019.
