The Omega Sci-Fi Awards from Light Bringer Project

The Light Bringer Project is a nonprofit organization that is dedicated to fostering community and creativity through art and education. They are currently hosting a short story contest called The Omega Sci-Fi awards, which seeks to empower emerging writers to explore the challenges and moral dilemmas faced by humanity through the lens of science fiction.

The contest features four cash prizes, including three Roswell Awards and the New Suns Climate Fiction Award. The Roswell Award is given to stories that explore themes such as social justice, feminism, identity, inequity, environmental sustainability, ethics, and technology. The New Suns Climate Fiction award is given to original short science fiction that imagines new ways of living and portrays humanity overcoming today’s climate and biodiversity crises.

Selected finalists in the contest will have their stories read by celebrity guests during the May 2023 Culminating Event. The first, second, and third place winners of the Roswell Awards will receive $500, $250, and $100 USD, respectively. The winner of the New Suns Climate Fiction Award will receive a $500 USD cash prize. In addition, the first place Roswell Award winner will receive access to the UCLA Extension Writers’ Program sponsored 10-week or shorter online course.

To be eligible for the contest, entries must be between 500 and 1500 words, and participants must be at least 17 years old. The deadline to enter is December 19th, 2022, and entries will be accepted from writers around the world. For more information, visit the contest page on the Light Bringer Project website.
