Roads & Kingdom: $1,000 for Narrative Travel Writing

Roads & Kingdoms uses “talented local journalists, deep storytelling, and the good things in life—food, music, booze—to inform and inspire about destinations around the globe.”

According to their website:

The late Anthony Bourdain was our first and only investor, our spirit animal, our guide to so many things.

They accept pitches directly from freelance writers.

They want concise pitches, that “summarize in a paragraph what the story is about and the character(s) driving it.” Also, be sure to specify the section of their site your article could be published in.

(As Ian Chandler teaches in The No B.S. Course on Freelance Writing, concise pitches are almost always the way to go, even if they’re not specifically asked for.)

The payment rate varies quite a bit. They have city guides, newsy articles, mini-features, and “breakfast posts.” For writers looking to write in-depth, longform content, they have a series called Dispatched by Bourdain.

They pay $25 for a breakfast post, $150 for a basic feature and $1,000 and up for an in-depth longform for their Dispatched series. To find out more, visit this page.
