6 Magazines that Pay Writers $150 to $1,000

The following is a list of magazines that accept submissions from freelance writers. All of them openly report payment rates on their websites. All of them pay writers. The maximum pay ranges from $150 to $1,000, depending on the publication.

  1. The North Coast Journal is a regional newspaper for Humboldt County, California. They publish cover stories, which are usually narrative essays, upfront stories, which tend to be more newsy, short stories, and poetry. They pay $300 to $400 for cover stories.   2. The Kentucky Monthly is a print magazine published 10 times a year. They aim to “united Kentuckians everywhere and create a sense of pride and community.” They cover culture, food, history, Kentuckians, outdoors, travel destinations in Kentucky, as well as the state’s outdoor activities.   3. Northern Virginia Magazine publishes articles about travel, fashion/style, regional arts, businesses, and prominent invididuals. They pay $50 to $1,000 per story.   4. Inside Publications publishes 4 hyper-local monthly papers in the Sacramento, California area. They pay $100 to $150 per story. To learn more, read their submission guidelines.
  5. While not exactly a writing gig, McCalls Quilting publishes original quilt designs. They pay up to $400 for original quilt designs, depending on the size of the project. To learn more, read their submission guidelines
  6. The Alberta Fishing Guide Magazine is an annual magazine that covers fishing in Alberta, Canada. They provide “up to date information regarding access; fish species, size & catchability; angling pressure; forage & hatches; as well as other pertinent information such as time for a stream to clear after a storm.” They up $350 to $500 fo features.  To learn more, read their submission guidelines.
