Is Freelance Writing the Right Work-From-Home Gig For You?

If you know someone who is a successful freelance writer, you may want to emulate that person’s seemingly amazing job. Freelance writing is one of these wonderful jobs that many people dream about doing for a living, but very few actually act on that desire and pursue it as a full-time career. However, you may be one of those people who want to explore the job more fully as a part-time or full-time career choice. While there are other work-from-home gigs that you may be considering as well, you may be wondering if freelance writing is the right gig for you.

Income Stability

One of the key factors that you may be concerned about involves income and the stability of income that you may enjoy. The fact is that many freelance writers enjoy very stable income, but there is rarely a guarantee that your pay will arrive at the exact day that you think it will or need it to. Furthermore, your income will only be stable and relatively high if you devote regular, full-time effort to the job. You essentially have to commit to working in the job on a full-time basis almost every day if you can expect to receive high, stable income. This is a job that requires considerable effort rather than a get-rich-quick job that requires little effort. You will be paid according to the results you produce.

Your Home Office

The vast majority of freelance writers work out of their home, so you should carefully consider what it would be like to actually work at home. Where would you sit all day? Is your home quiet enough for you to concentrate in? Would you go stir crazy when you sit in front of the computer for hours at a stretch and don’t have any co-workers to talk to? While freelance writing can be far more relaxing than many other types of jobs, it nonetheless can be physically demanding and psychologically grueling at times. This is not the type of job that everyone is cut out for.

Under Pressure

Many people are great writers, but not every great writer will be a great freelance writer. The fact is that when you sit down to write a little diddy on your own, you can write about any topic that you want. There is no pressure to write about a specific topic or even to complete your piece within a certain period of time. When you are a freelance writer, you don’t have the luxury of picking and choosing your topics most of the time. You must write about topics that people want you to write about and in a style that they demand. Furthermore, you must do so quickly and with high quality results. You need to be able to create a wonderful piece in a very short period of time so that you can move on to your next assignment. It is not feasible to sit down work on the same 400-word article for an hour or two and expect to have a profitable day.

The fact is that freelance writing is an amazing job, but it is not a job that everyone will love or that everyone will find success and great profits with. Review these points carefully as you decide if you want to pursue freelance writing.
