How Freelance Writers Can Diversify Their Income Stream

As a freelance writer, it’s easy to feel like you are spinning your wheels each and every day, as though your livelihood is dependent on the whim of a handful of clients continuing to throw work your way. This kind of work life can really create a lot of stress for you, but fortunately it doesn’t have to be that way at all. The secret to resting easy at night with the peace of mind that comes with knowing your job is safe and secure lies in diversifying your freelance writing income stream. So just how can you do that?

Find More Clients. Of course, the most obvious answer is to work with more than a couple of clients. If you have one, two, or even three clients who serve as the main source of income for you, you may want to consider branching out a bit. Time certainly is a limiting factor here, as you only have so much time available during the day when you can (or want to) work. However, if you are less than thrilled with one of your clients or or not yet as busy as you’d like to be, you can certainly look for some new clients that provide you with smaller amounts of stable income. Where diversifying your income is concerned, it’s far better to have income from six or seven clients than from one or two.

Self-Publish. Working for clients is definitely one way to earn a living as a freelance writer, but the fact is that there are plenty of opportunities available for freelance writers to make money without the need to go through a client at all. There are several websites online that allow you to earn money for publishing or selling your own work, and this not only gives you the ability to earn money without the whim of clients being a concern, but it also allows you the freedom to write about topics that most interest you. Consider writing for sites like Constant-content.com, Yahoo! Voices, Content Authority, and others.

Ad Revenue. As a freelance writer, you may have not yet considered using your services as an affiliate marketer or to create ad revenue from publishing your own blog. The fact is, though, that these are alternative jobs that require writing skills to make money, and with your writing skills, you could indeed begin to generate income from these sources as well. Generally, these are passive income sources, meaning that you may do the work today and not get paid at all for your time and effort, but over the months and years you will see a continuous return on your work.

Many of the most successful (and financially carefree) freelance writers are those who do not rely on just one or two clients for their income but instead have taken measures to diversify their income stream. In fact, many have put all of the above suggestions into practice in their own life and are enjoying income from a variety of sources on a regular basis!
