How Freelance Writers Can Boost Their Income

Freelance writers really have a lot of control over their income. In some professions, you get paid a certain salary, and you earn the same amount regardless of how many extra hours or how much extra effort you put into your job. As a freelance writer, you generally get paid per project or per single piece you write. You also have control over the rates you charge for your services, too. So clearly you have a lot of ability to really control your income. You may be wondering, however, how you can boost your income. Here are some tips:

Improving Efficiency. Getting more work done in less time is always one way to earn more money as a freelance writer. You may think that you are stretched to the limit right now in terms of your work hours. However, you may find that by making changes to your work environment, you can improve your ability to focus and concentrate better on the work at hand. You can also re-structure your workday so that you work for longer stretches or shorter stretches with mind breaks, depending on how you tend to work better. Each writer is unique, and so you will need to spend some time thinking about what steps you need to take to improve your efficiency.

Extra Gigs. Hopefully, you can free up some time to pick up extra assignments by improving your efficiency. Some assignments may take up a very short amount of time each day, such as a gig requiring you to write a single blog post each day, you really can easily find assignments that fit your own unique availability. When picking up extra assignments, be sure that you can always consider first if adding a new assignment to your workload would affect your ability to provide quality work.

Writing For Article Services. There are a handful of article services that essentially allow you to pick and choose single articles that you want to write. There is no bidding involved, as is the case with other sites. You can simply log in, choose an article and start writing. These are great sites that freelance writers can use to keep working during those slower periods. In some cases, these sites may be better to use than committing to a regular, on-going assignment. This is because with a regular, on-going assignment, you are committing yourself to a certain level of steady work and this limits your flexibility with your work schedule. These services allow you to work as much or as little as you want or need.

Improving Your Rates. One other thing you can consider in addition to working on more assignments and pieces is to bump up your rates a bit. This can be a bit tricky to do, as you may have established rates with certain clients. If you are not comfortable asking for a rate bump, another option is to transition out of current projects and transition into new projects that offer a higher rate.

Boosting your income as a freelance writer is often not done overnight, but rather is a process. You can use some of these tips and ideas to take your income to the next level.
