Fun Writing Gigs Most Freelance Writers Aren’t Taking Advantage Of

As a freelance writer, you no doubt hear comments from friends and family about what an easy job you have and how cushy it must be to work at home, set your own hours, and not have to deal with co-workers or a boss. While that (for the part anyway) is largely all true, the truth is that you know first hand just how grueling it can be to sit in front of the computer and force yourself to write about topics that just don’t interest you in the least bit purely for the sake of paying the bills. It is, after all, one thing to work on projects that you don’t enjoy in a salaried job, and another thing entirely to work on those projects as a freelance writer when you won’t get paid until the project is completed and up to snuff.

The fact is that you may always have to pick up a dull or tedious project from time to time, there are actually a number of fabulously fun writing gigs you can work on, too. In fact, there may be some that you have never even thought about doing!

Greeting Cards. If you are like most people, you’ve never given a second thought to how those rows and rows of greeting cards got onto store shelves, but the fact is that someone has to write them! Some greeting card companies do employ staff writers to come up with their funny, inspirational, heartfelt, or romantic passages, but others openly accept and encourage submissions from freelance writers. As a plus, if you have an artistic side, many will accept your artwork submissions along with your passages, too.

Travel Writer. Not every freelance writer has time to kill with road trips or travel abroad. However, if you have time to kill, money to burn, and a desire to see the world, you can absolutely make a few bucks writing about anything and everything you see and experience en route. You can write reviews about restaurants, attractions, live shows, hotels, and more, as well as travel tips for traveling to certain destinations, too. The fact is that one well-planned, action-packed trip can leave you with enough article fodder for at least a couple of dozen articles. Wondering what to do with these articles? You can self-publish them on sites like Yahoo! Voices and other such sites, or you can sell rights to the articles on sites like Constant-Content and other similar sites. Or if you are truly adventurous, you can compile enough information to write a complete book.

Local Interest Writer. Travel writers have a blast because they are constantly seeing new things, enjoying new experiences, and getting paid to write about it. The good news is that you actually don’t have to venture far at all to enjoy writing about fun topics because if you life in a mid to larger sized city (or at least close to one), you likely have a ton of things you can write about right at your finger tips. You can turn create local interest content for various websites like those mentioned above or even submit a few pieces to your local newspapers and magazines, too. Consider writing about local traditions and festivities, special interest stories, reviews on restaurants and family attractions, and more. You only have to consider all of the things you do a web search for yourself to get some great ideas on topics to cover.

The truth is that as a freelance writer, you will no doubt pick up some assignments that do nothing more for your life than add some greenbacks to your wallet, but there are also some really fun ways you can earn a living, too. Consider these fun ideas as a way to get started expanding your horizons a bit.
