Freelance Writing in Your Golden Years: Tips for Retirees

If you are like so many other retirees, you have been looking for a great way to supplement your income. Some retirees would like to supplement their income now while they are still relatively young in order to maximize the life of their nest egg. Others may have been hit hard by the recent economic downturn, and they may still be trying to recover financially. Still others want to find something constructive to do during the day. If you have an interest in writing, you may be able to start a new career as a freelance writer.

Your Skills

Before you embark on this new career in your golden years, you should ensure that you have the skills necessary for the job. The most important skill is to know how to write well with minimal grammatical and spelling mistakes. Keep in mind that many clients will want you to write in a manner that conforms to AP-style guidelines. Also, keep in mind that some acceptable grammatical rules may have evolved since you last took an English class. After all, English is a living language. Simply brushing up on your skills may prove to be useful before you get started.

The Equipment

One of the great reasons why freelance writing is a great job for retirees is because it allows you to set your own work hours while working from home. However, in order to benefit from these benefits, you do need the equipment necessary for the job available at home. Largely, you will only need a computer and an Internet connection. However, you may find that a printer and fax machine are useful with certain clients. If you don’t have this basic equipment on hand, you will want to invest in the equipment before you get started.

The Work

The work you may find as a freelance writer is varied. You may be able to write guest blog posts for a blog geared toward senior citizens, travelogues based on your personal travel experiences, parenting advice for new parents and so much more. As an older adult, you may find that your vast life experiences provide you with a great resource that you can draw from as you work from home. Some people may need to research some of the many topics they are asked to write about, but you may have enough first-hand experience and knowledge on many subjects that your research is minimal. With this in mind, as you start looking for assignments, you may consider putting your experience and knowledge to work by looking for topics that you have first-hand experience with.

Freelance writing is a great career for so many people, and it can be especially fabulous for retirees who no longer have the desire to work outside the home or to commit to a certain work schedule. With freelance writing, you can stay active and productive in your free time while also enjoying the freedom that comes with being retired. You can work just a few hours a week, or you can come out of retirement and start working full-time if you have the desire or need to do so.
