Can Blogging Really Pay the Bills?

You may have heard about people who make a pretty great living blogging on their own websites. You may also have a few friends, family members, or co-workers who have their own blogs. There are hundreds of thousands of blogs on the internet now, and so you may be wondering, “Why can’t I start one?” Further, you may be wondering if this little blog of yours may actually one day help you to pay your bills. Here are some things to keep in mind about blogs:

How Bloggers Make Money. Bloggers generally make money through a couple of different methods, but it really all boils down to advertising. Some advertisers will pay for use on your space, and some will pay you money if one of your readers clicks on the ad. Others will pay you for an endorsement inside a blog post. Of course, advertisers won’t pay you a dime if you cannot provide results for them, and you really have to attract a lot of viewers to a site to be able to deliver those results.

Standing Out From the Crowd. You should be aware that that are tons of blogs online today that only get a few hits per day at best. Yet some of the most popular blogs get hundreds of thousands of hits each time a new post is added to the site. In order to make money as a blogger, you have to be one of those bloggers whose site attracts tons of regular readers. You don’t necessarily need hundreds of thousands of viewers a day, but you do need a significant amount of traffic coming to your site on a regular basis.

The Work Involved. So then what is involved in developing a great blog that makes a decent amount of money? First, you will want to create a unique angle for your blog to take. There are tons of tech savvy blogs, blogs written by stay-at-home moms who offer parenting tips, and more. Find a fresh angle, and add your own unique spin or the flair of your personality to it. Then make an effort to write regular posts every day or two. More than that, you will have to be your own marketing agent, promoting your blog on various message boards, and announcing it to friends and family on social media sites. Your goal is to build your followers over time.

It can be quite difficult to make a decent amount of money off of just one blog. Because of this, often those who are full-time bloggers are those who operate several blogs. Many will even outsource the work of writing the posts to a freelance writer in an effort to free up time so they can market their blog. You can see that this would take a considerable amount of time and effort, and the financial returns for these efforts are not guaranteed. Many people will make the decision to start a blog slowly while making an effort to continue earning income from another source, too.
