9 Short Story Publishers that Pay $100+ Per Story

Here is a list of eight publishers currently seeking submissions of short stories. Topics include fiction about the U.S. West, earth (and space) science, water lore, funny stories, literary fiction, non-fiction and poetry, film scripts, and novel excerpts. Deadlines are listed, if applicable.

1. Flame Tree Publishing: Alien Invasion Anthology

Do aliens live among us today? What would happen when they invade? Would the invasion be an act of aggression, or of assistance and care, or a reminder of our paltry existence in the universe? Writers can submit more than one story for this Gothic Fantasy anthology, and they accept reprints. Submit by 29 September 2017.
Word count: 2,000-4,000 (but can read slightly outside this range)

2. Flame Tree Publishing: Endless Apocalypse

How would we survive if all we know around us came to an end – with no fuel, transport, communication and the onslaught of disease? Writers can submit more than one story for this Gothic Fantasy anthology, and they accept reprints. Submit by 29 September 2017.

3. Three-Lobed Burning Eye Magazine

The magazine publishes speculative fiction: horror, fantasy and science fiction. They publish the magazine online twice a year (Spring and Fall) and a print anthology twice a year, and are currently open for submissions. They welcome translations. See guidelines for the kind of fiction they prefer.
Word count: 2,000-7,000 (2,000-5,000 preferred); 500-1,000 for flash fiction

4. Rosarium Publishing: Trouble the Waters – Tales from the Deep Blue Anthology

This is an anthology of water-themed speculative fiction stories that explores water-lore and deities, ancient and new, as well as unimagined tales. Submit stories by 1 November 2017.
Word count: 2,500-7,000

5. FunnyinFiveHundred

They are looking for funny fiction. They don’t want stories attacking groups of people or public figure, and pay only for novelettes.
Word count: 7,500-15,000; 250-500 for flash fiction (unpaid)

6. The Lascaux Review

They accept stories, poems and essays of literary quality. A tip from their editor: if submitting multiple poems or flash pieces, present your best first.
Word count: Up to five poems; unspecified for prose
Pay: $100 per story, essay, poem (or group of poems)

7. Southern Indiana Review

They accept drama (10-minute scripts and long one-acts), fiction (short stories, film scripts or novel excerpts), non-fiction (creative essays, reviews, profiles, interviews, discussions about social/intellectual reviews or ideas) or poetry. See editors’ statements for the kind of work they prefer.
Word count: Up to five poems
Pay: $50 for five layout pages or fewer; $100 for six layout pages or more

This is an anthology of short fiction exploring the United States West, from the untouched wilderness to hyper-urban settings. Submit by 31 October 2017.

9. Issues in Earth (and Space) Science

They want fiction and non-fiction for middle grade/young adult readers that incorporates Earth Science concepts as key, rather than incidental, elements. See guidelines for the kind of stories they publish, and the seed topic for non-fiction. Submit by 15 October 2017.
Word count: 1,000-3,000 (prefer 2,000) for fiction; 500-1,000 for non-fiction (prefer texts closer to 500)
