Life & Thyme is a print magazine and website that specializes in culinary storytelling and food journalism. They are looking for pitches for “stories that explore topics related to parenting while working in the food industry.” They are “especially looking for pitches about parents with children at home who are working an on-site food or hospitality job during Covid.” Pay is $200 to $400 per piece. The New Republic is a journal of opinion that is dedicated to solving today’s most critical issues. Their editor has tweeted, “Looking for a few stories to close out the year for the New Republic. Topics can vary but inequality and climate change will be my focus.” Pay will be $400 per piece (1,000 to 1,200 words). Their editor has a limited number of slots for stories and will assign them in a few days, so send your pitches no later than Friday. Insider is a website that shares all the adventures that life has to offer. Their lifestyle and entertainment editor has tweeted, “Currently looking for entertainment analysis pitches. Do you want to highlight the biggest mistake in “Gilmore Girls”? or break down Dumbledore’s biggest failures? or explain why exactly Draco Malfoy is so beloved yet so absent? Email me!” “Primarily looking for pitches tied to trending/popular shows and movies (like Twilight, The Queen’s Gambit, High School Musical, Gilmore Girls, Harry Potter, The Office, Friends, Home Alone…). SKTCHD is a subscription based comic book website that focuses on longform articles, in-depth interviews, and more. Their founder has tweeted, “I’m always listening for pitches for SKTCHD, and these are paid opportunities. Interested in writing about comics but not a standard interview/preview/review? Email me at david@SKTCHD.com. Only really do a piece a month or so, but I’m open to pieces on basically any subject.” Rates depend on the article. Their founder tweeted, “The lowest I pay is $75 for an article and that’s for shorter, more straightforward pieces. The Martlet (a student newspaper based out of University of Victoria) and the Native Students Union (a student-run collective that supports the Indigenous student community at the University of Victoria) are looking for pitches for their Indigenous issue which will be published in January, 2021. The issue will feature stories by 8 Indigenous writers. Stories should be about 1,000 words. Pay will be $150 per story. If you partner with another Indigenous writer or photographer, then you can write a feature-length story of 2,000+ words. In this case, both of you will be paid $150. They cover science, politics, business, history, crime, and more. Their newly appointed managing editor is looking for freelancers-both new and established. They will pay $0.40 to $0.80 CAD per word.
