7 Short Story Publishers that Pay (Up to $500)

The following is a list of 7 short story publications currently seeking submissions. All of the publishers pay, though the payment varies.

  1. Scout.ai, an online community that combines sci-fi and journalism, is seeking short stories that “illustrate the social impacts of emerging technologies.” They pay 8 cents per word, up to 3,000 words. To learn more, read their submission guidelines.
  2. The Binge Watching Cure II is a forthcoming anthology, following the success of the original anthology. The second edition will feature horror-themed stories. They pay $200 for stories under 5,000 words, and $500 for longer stories. To learn more, read their submission guidelines.
  3. Room, the Canadian Feminist magazine, is seeking short stories, poetry, and creative non-fiction on the topic of “family secrets.” The deadline is July 31st, 2017. They pay up to $150. To learn more, read their submission guidelines.
  4. Sharp & Sugar Tooth: Women Up to No Good is a forthcoming anthology from Upper Rubber Boot. They “want these characters in the kitchen—and out of it—using their butcher knives and baking skills to create meals that are dark and lovely and empowering, because consumption has a dangerous and tempting taste…” Payment is 6 cents per word, up to 5,000 words.   5. AFTERMATH: Explorations of Loss & Grief is an anthology that seeks to examine ” what it means to face the consequences after tragedy strikes.” They pay 6 cents per word, up to 3,000 words. The deadline is August 15th, 2017. To learn more, read their submission guidelines.
  6. Alice Unbound is a forthcoming anthology in need of submissions from Canadian writers. They will pay up to $250 for short stories inspired by Lewis Carroll.   7. Trouble The Waters: Tales from the Deep Blue seeks to be a new anthology of “water-themed speculative short stories that explore all kinds of water lore and deities, ancient and new as well as unimagined tales.” The submission deadline is November 1st, 2017.
