7 Publications that Pay $200+ Per Short Story

The following is a list of 7 publications currently calling for submissions of short stories.

All of these publications pay up to $200, and sometimes more.

Deadlines are included when appropriate. The list is in no particular order.

1. Strange Horizons is a speculative fiction publication that features fiction, poetry, reviews, essays, interviews, roundtable discussions, and art. They pay 8 cents per word for short stories. To learn more, read their submission guidelines.

2. On Spec is “the Canadian magazine of the fantastic.” They are open to writers both in and out of Canada. They were originally started by a group of Canadians who didn’t want to “Americanize” their stories for paying markets. They’re volunteer run, but they still pay their authors. Payment is up to $200, depending on length. The current deadline for submission is January 31st, 2017. To learn more, read their submission guidelines.

3. Apex Magazine publishes science fiction, fantasy, and horror. They publish stories directly on their website, so you can easily get a sense of what they publish. They pay 6 cents a word, up to 7,500 words, plus another once cent per word if they turn your story into a podcast. They are currently open to submissions. 4. Gothic Tales of Haunted Love is a forthcoming romance comic anthology. Teams of artists/writers are welcome to submit proposals to be part of the new anthology. Payment is $50 per page, up to 10 pages, plus a percentage of net profit. The deadline is February 1st. To learn more, read their submission guidelines.

5. Shimmer Magazine is a speculative fiction magazine that “aspires to publish excellent fiction across lines of race, income, nationality, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, age, geography, and culture.” They are currently open to submissions. They pay 5 cents per word. Preferred length is around four thousand words. To learn more, read their submission guidelines.

6. Ruminate Magazine‘s editors “believe that a good word, a real story, or a perfect brushstroke can be spiritual acts expressing the beauty, creativity, and ironies of the human experience.” They are currently seeking submissions of creative nonfiction. They want essays, short memoirs, literary journalism, etc. They pay $15 per 400 words. The max length is 5,500 words. To learn more, read their submission guidelines.

7. Canadian Soldier Stories is an upcoming anthology of true stories written by Canadian soldiers. It will be published by Simon and Schuster Canada. The editor wants “true accounts of danger and peril, but also bravery and resilience.” Payment will be $200 per story. To learn more, read the submission guidelines.
