1. The California Sunday Magazine is a general interest publication covering the areas of “California, the West, Asia, and Latin America, telling stories for a national audience.” Articles cover everything from restaurants to the delicate art of guiding a container ship into a dock. 2. The Washington Monthly is a bimonthly magazine covering politics, government, culture and the media. The vast majority of articles have a political focus. They pay 10 cents per word, up to 5,000 words. To learn more, read their submission guidelines.
3. High Country News is a non-profit news magazine covering the American West. Their motto is “For People Who Care About The West”. Their primary focus is the environment. They pay between $.50 and $1.50 a word.  To learn more, read their submission guidelines.
4. Country Magazine is all about living the small town, rural lifestyle. They publish stories, photographs, jokes, and recipes. They feature stories and memories of country living. 5. Parabola is the quarterly magazine published by The Society for the Study of Myth and Tradition, a non-profit organization. Each issue of Parabola is focused on “one of the timeless themes of human existence.” The tag line for the magazine is “the Search for Meaning.” They pay up to $400 for essays. 6. Wanderlust is a British travel magazine. They have an active website as well as their print magazine. They pay £220 per 1,000 published words for feature articles. To learn more, read their submission guidelines.
7. Confrontation Magazine is now open to submissions of short stories, poetry, and essays. They are a very established literary journal, with a prestigious background. They published W.H. Auden, John Steinbeck, T.C. Boyle, and many other legendary writers.
