The Sunday Times/Peter Fraser & Dunlop Young Writer of the Year

This is for UK/Ireland based authors aged 18-35. The prize is for a published or self-published book or e-book of fiction, nonfiction or poetry of high literary merit.

The Norton Writer’s Prize
This is for undergraduates. Literary narratives, literary and other textual analyses, reports, profiles, evaluations, arguments, memoirs, proposals, mixed-genre pieces, are all accepted – writing for an undergraduate writing class, of 1,000-3,000 words. Entries require nomination by an instructor (one nomination per instructor).
Value: $1,500, two prizes of $1,000 each

Eleanor Taylor Bland Crime Fiction Writers of Color Award
This grant is for unpublished or emerging writers of color in crime fiction. Writers can submit an unpublished work of crime fiction (for an adult audience, rather than children or YA) of 2,500-5,000 words.

American-Scandinavian Foundation’s Translation Awards
There are two awards – the Leif and Inger Sjöberg Award, for those whose translations from a Nordic language have not been previously published, and the Nadia Christensen Prize. These are for English translations of poetry, fiction, drama and literary prose originally written by a Nordic author born after 1900. Submit 50 pages of prose or 25 pages of poetry.
Value: $2,500 for the Nadia Christensen Prize, $2,000 for the Leif and Inger Sjöberg Award

Independent Legions Publishing: Inferno Award This award is for an unpublished horror novella (45,000-50,000 words). All types of horror are welcome. All subgenres and forms of speculative fiction are welcome.

Bard Fiction Prize 

This is for an emerging writer who is a US citizen aged 39 years or younger. The award includes a residency at Bard College, New York, and a cash prize. Candidates should write a cover letter explaining the project they plan to work on while at Bard and submit a CV, along with three copies of the published book they feel best represents their work. There are no formal teaching duties attached to the residency.

Goi Peace Foundation’s International Essay Contest
This essay is for people aged up to 25 years, in two categories – children and youth. The theme is The Change I Want to Make. Entries can be in English, French, Spanish or German (up to 700 words), or Japanese (up to 1,600 characters). This is an activity of the UNESCO Global Action Programme on Education for Sustainable Development.
Value: For each category, the first prize is JPY100,000 and a sponsored trip to the award ceremony in Tokyo and a Minister of Education award; JPY50,000;  five third prizes, and 25 honorable mentions

This is for junior and senior division students worldwide on the theme, ‘Our Oceans in a Changing Climate’. There are various categories: art, poetry, prose (all forms), film and music.

Creative Future Literary Awards

This is for underrepresented (broadly defined – see guidelines) UK writers of both poetry and short stories. Poems can be up to 200 words and fiction, up to 1,000 words. The work can be submitted online, by post, or in person.

Blue Mountain Arts Biannual Poetry Card Contest

Poems for this contest can be rhyming or non-rhyming, though they say that non-rhyming works better. They suggest, “write about real emotions and feelings and that you have some special person or occasion in mind as you write.”  There is no limit to the number of entries.

This award is for a promising new journalist or essayist whose work combines warmth, humour, wisdom and concern with social justice. Applications should include two work samples, published or unpublished – a maximum of 30 pages. At least one must be non-memoir.

PEN America Writing for Justice Fellowships
This is for US-based writers and there are no genre restrictions. Their website says, the “Fellowships will commission six writers – emerging or established – to create written works of lasting merit that illuminate critical issues related to mass incarceration and catalyze public debate.” Emphasis will be placed on proposed projects that show strong promise for publication. See guidelines for specific deliverables, including submitting the project for publication by May 2019. Currently and formerly incarcerated writers are highly encouraged to apply.

Owl Canyon Press Short Story Hackathon
This is a 50-paragraph fiction contest where the first and last paragraphs of the story are provided (see guidelines); authors have to fill in 48 paragraphs in the middle. Each paragraph needs to be at least 40 words and there is no maximum word count. There should be no dialogue quotes, just narrative and action.

Penguin Random House WriteNow workshops and mentoring program

These are free workshops on fiction – including verse novels, nonfiction, and children’s writing by Penguin Random House for new, underrepresented or marginalised UK writers (see guidelines). Application for fiction includes an initial work sample of up to 1,000  words (additional 5,000 words, to be sent for individual mentorship later, if selected) and synopsis. There are a limited number of travel grants available to get to the workshops, which will be held in London, Liverpool and Nottingham. The publishing house will also cover travel and accommodation costs where needed for mentoring in London. They also have workshops for underrepresented illustrators; applicants may apply as writers, or illustrators, or both.
