5 Short Story Publishers that Pay Professional Rates

The following is a list of five short story publishers currently seeking submissions. All of these publishers pay at least 6 cents per word, which is the professional rate according to the SFWA guidelines. These publishers are primarily seeking speculative fiction, fantasy, and horror.
Cosmic Roots and Eldritch Shores seeks to “boldly go through time, mind, and the cosmos.” They pay 6 cents a word for stories of for fiction. Submissions are expected to open on February 1st. To learn more, read their submission guidelines.
InterGalactic Medicine Show publishes sci-fi stories of “any length.” They pay 6 cents a word. Writers who exemplify what they’re looking for include Asimov, Tolkien, Yolen, and Hobb. To learn more, read their submission guidelines.
Third Flatiron is a sci-fi and fantasy publisher of quarterly themed anthologies. They publish short stories up to 3,000 words. Payment is up to 6 cents per word. To learn more, read their submission guidelines.
Fantasy and Science Fiction is one of the major magazines of the genre. They pay 7-12 cents a word, up to 25,000 words. That adds up to a possible $3,000 payment. They want stories that appeal to “all fantasy and science fiction readers.” They are particularly interested in recieving more submissions of humorous stories. Apex Magazine publishes science fiction, fantasy, and horror. They publish stories directly on their website, so you can easily get a sense of what they publish. They pay 6 cents a word, up to 7,500 words, plus 1 cent a word if they turn it into a podcast. Submission guidelines.
