5 Short Story Publishers that Pay $250+ Per Story

The following is a list of short story publishers currently seeking submissions. All of these publishers pay $250 for short stories, and sometimes more. None of them charge submission fees.

The list is in no particular order.

1. Beneath Ceaseless Skies is an online magazine of literary adventure fantasy. They don’t publish stories set in the “real world,” they want alternative worlds that are different than our own. They publish stories up to 11,000 words, and pay 6 cents per word. That works out to a maximum of $660 per story. To learn more, read their submission guidelines.

2. Prairie Fire is a Canadian literary journal. They publish short stories, poetry, and art. They pay 10 cents per word, for short stories, up to CAD $350. To learn more, read their submission guidelines.

3. Compelling Science Fiction seeks to publish and promote the best science fiction stories. They want stories that:

  1. illustrate at least one interesting concept,
  2. are engaging, and
  3. clearly explain the science/technology in the story.

They particularly want humor. They pay 6 cents per word, up to 10,000 words. That works out to a maximum of $600. To learn more, read their submission guidelines.

4. Terraform, part of Vice.com, publishes speculative fiction in “digestible internet length.” They focus on “the tech, science, and future culture topics driving the zeitgeist.” They pay 20 cents per word up to 2,000 words. To learn more, read their submission guidelines.

5. Opossum is a new online literary magazine “animated by music.” They seek to publish work ” in which the presence of music verges on the subliminal.” They publish 3 issues a year, and pay $250 for short stories and essays and $100 for poems, flash fiction, and non-fiction.  To learn more, read their submission guidelines.
