5 New Sites Seeking Writers (Up to $1 Per Word)

Here are five websites that launched recently, or are launching soon. All of them work with freelance writers, and pay for the writing they publish, though the rate of pay does vary significantly.

Level is a new publication from Medium. They aim to offer “the best commentary on race, identity and culture for men of color, as well as tips on how to live your best life.” Expect professional rates. Many new Medium publications pay up to $1 per word. To learn more, read their guide to pitching here.

Passage is a new (launching in February 2020) Canadian leftist opinion/analysis publication. They are looking for opinion, analysis, reviews, and critique. They prefer submissions that are focused on ideas, policy, history, or other broader themes, and not on day-to-day partisan politics. They pay $100 for shorter pieces of 700 to 1,200 words and $250 for longer pieces of 1,500 words or more. They pay within 5 days of work completion. SOLRAD is a new website that mostly covers independent/alternative comics. They are looking for pitches for comics criticism, essays, and interviews. They are particularly interested in cartoonists writing about other cartoonists, and work from academics. They will pay $75 per article. For details, refer to this Twitter post and their website.

Oh Reader is a print and online magazine about reading. Their first edition will be released in June 2020. They will publish 4 times a year. They are “looking for stories about your experiences as a reader, insight into the effect of reading on humans, humorous takes on the world of words, and anything else you as a reader or writer might be interested in sharing.” They will pay a flat rate of $200 per published article. Glimmer is a new magazine by Glitch (a community and platform for people who make the web). They are “commissioning reported features, interviews, analysis, and illustrated works about how technology impacts our culture, work, and world.” They will pay $500 to $800 for stories of 500 to 2,000 words.
