The following is a list of magazines that pay $200 or more to freelance writers. Each of these magazines accepts submissions from freelance writers.
I’ve included pay information, when available. The pay information should be used as a tool when negotiating with the publisher. Rates are not set in stone.

1. The American Scholar covers public affairs, literature, history, and culture. They have been around since 1932. They are published quarterly by the Phi Beta Kappa Society. They accept submissions of nonfiction from known and unknown writers. They pay up to $500. Difficult market. To learn more, read their submission guidelines.
2. EFCA Today and EFCA Now are published by the Evangelical Free Church of America. They pay 23 cents a word. To learn more, read their submission guidelines.
3. Guide Magazine is a Christian story magazine for young people ages 10-14. They publish true stories, not fictional ones. They publish adventure stories, biography, Christian humor, nature stories, personal growth stories, and story series. Each series has 2-12 chapters, with each chapter around 1200 words. 4. Cat Fancy is the magazine dedicated to “the love of cats.” They have a very large readership. Expect quite competitive payments. To learn more, read their submission guidelines.
5. Virginia Wildlife Magazine is published bi-monthly by the Department of Game and Fisheries. It’s been published for over 70 years. They pay $50-$500 for articles. To learn more, read their submission guidelines. Or, visit their website.
