The following is a list of publishers that pay writers. All of them pay at least $500 for some of the articles they publish.
Even if they state their payment up front, pay rates are often still negotiated. If you’d like a great primer on negotiating pay rates, building a list of clients, and succeeding as a freelance writer, I highly recommend this book.

- The Artist’s Magazine was created for artists and art enthusiasts. They showcase artists, and publish interviews, practical lessons in technique, as well as news and discussions of timely events. They pay up to $600 for features. To learn more, read theirs submission guidelines.
- High Times publishes articles about marijuana cultivation and counterculture lifestyle. They have a special interest in marijuana legalization. They pay up to $1,000 for feature articles. Be sure to query first, or they may not pay. To learn more, read their submission guidelines.
- Readers Digest Canada pays at least $1 a word for articles. They publish columns, profiles, “rants”, first person narratives, features, and more. To learn more, read their submission guidelines.
- Pennsylvania Heritage magazine is published by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission with the Pennsylvania Heritage Foundation. They focus on Pennsylvania’s “rich culture and historic legacy.” They pay between $250 and $500 for articles. To learn more, read their submission guidelines.
- Powder is a magazine for skiers. Their “mission is to come as close as possible to the expert skiing experience through words, photos, graphics, and humor.” They have a circulation of 150,000. Payment is negotiated. Features run up to 2,000 words. To learn more, read their submission guidelines.
