Writing for digital magazines, websites, and blogs can be a great way to break into freelance writing, especially because it is so easy to send a pitch via email.

Southwinds Magazine is a print and online magazine for boat racers and cruisers in the southeastern United States. They generally publish articles that are 1,500 to 2,000 words long. If requested, they always pay their authors for good articles. The payment is $0.10 per word. The authors should indicate in their initial inquiry that they are seeking payment. New Internationalist offers a distinctive point of view on the biggest problems facing the world today. They cover a variety of topics that range “from fracking to gender equality, and trade deals to technology.” They publish both in print and online. Bright covers health, education, and social justice, including essays and profiles. They’re a website founded by freelancer writers, so they’re likely to be freelancer friendly. EFNIKS is a website for queer & trans people of color. They exist at the “intersection of art, scholarship, and community.” They publish themed issues every month. Payment is $300 for cover stories.
