$450 for Holiday Stories

Cricket Magazine, often referred to as The New Yorker for Children, is seeking submissions of writing on the topic “Home for the Holidays.”

They’re asking for historical fiction, nonfiction, poetry, crafts, and recipes about holidays around the world and in the U.S.

They pay up to twenty five cents per word. Most short stories they publish are between 1,200 and 1,800 words, which works out to $300 to $450 per story.

According to their call for submissions:

Cricket (for ages 9–14) seeks contemporary and historical fiction, nonfiction, poetry, crafts, and recipes about the celebration or history of holidays around the world. We welcome well-told seasonal stories set against the background of major U.S. holidays, but we also have special interest in holidays and festivals celebrated in other parts of the world that may be less familiar to our young readers.”

The stories are for children ages nine to fourteen.

They are also calling for indigenous stories, stories about earning money, and poetry.
