10 Fishing Magazines that Pay Freelance Writers

The following is a list of fishing related magazines that accept submissions from freelance writers. Note that you’ll need to negotiate the pay for most of these magazines. Also keep in mind that most fishing magazines appreciate high-quality photography. If you’re able to provide both photos and prose, you’re generally able to command a much larger fee for your work.

  1. The Flyfish Journal

A Washington-based publication all about fly-fishing culture, The Flyfish Journal publishes four journals per volume. They put out colorful, story-based content for fly-fishing enthusiasts. Check out their submission guidelines.

 

  1. Sport Fishing

Sport Fishing is geared toward a mature, well-to-do readership. Published nine times a year, Sport Fishing is on the hunt for fresh, accurate material that makes for interesting features. Read their editorial guidelines to learn more.

 

  1. National Fisherman

National Fisherman is a trade publication that provides compelling and accurate coverage of the commercial fishing industry. Features run from 1,500 to 2,500 words and include fishing-trip narratives, profiles, historical pieces, and analysis of current fishing news and events.   1. Northwest Fly Fishing Magazine

Northwest Fly-Fishing is a bimonthly magazine covering the Northwest regions of the US and Canada. A compelling publication with stunning photography, Northwest includes feature articles about angling destinations, as well as several other departments. A fishing and hunting magazine covering fishing topics by species and method, as well as conservation issues, Field and Stream features detailed, technical articles, pointers, and equipment information. Another publication focusing on everything to do with the outdoors, from hunting and fishing to survival tips, Outdoor Life offers an array of info, tips, and tricks.
