7 Magazines & Websites that Pay $200+ Per Article

The following is a list of magazines that pay writers $200 per article. Keep in mind that each magazine has specific needs. While we have done our best to research pay information, writers may still have to negotiate rates with the publisher.

  1. The Sierra is the magazine of the Sierra club, the non-profit environmental activist organization. Their readers are “are environmentally concerned, politically diverse, and actively enjoy the outdoors.” They pay up to $1.50 a word for feature articles.   2. enRoute is the in-flight travel magazine for Air Canada. They reach over 1 million travelers a month. They are a “a travel magazine with a Canadian perspective that speaks to an international readership. ” They don’t list pay rates, but expect them to be competitive with national magazines.  To learn more, read their submission guidelines
  3. History Magazine provides “interesting and thought-provoking accounts of key events in global history.” They are focused on publishing accessible, entertaining, accounts of history. They pay 8 cents a word, up to 2,500 words. To learn more, read their submission guidelines.
  4. Advance for Occupational Therapy Practicioners is part of the “Advance” network of publications. Each seems to target a different aspect of health care  – primarily aimed at health care professionals. This magazine is a trade magazine for occupational therapists. They pay $150 for website articles, and $250 per page for print articles. To learn more, read their submission guidelines.
  5. True West magazine is a monthly magazine that covers the history of the American frontier through literary nonfiction and travel narratives. They are focused on the period between 1800 and 1912. They pay 25 cents per word. Feature article are around 1,500 words. They also pay $20 for photos. To learn more, read their submission guidelines.
  6. Polygon is a video game website focused on not just games, but “the artists who make them, the fans that love them and the culture surrounding them.” They accept queries from freelance writers for featured articles.
  7. Gothamist is a major news and lifestyle blog covering New York City. According to their guidelines “A well-sourced, 1,500-word indictment of governmental incompetence is just as welcome as a 500-word profile of the rat-slaying building super who listens to Van Halen while on the hunt.” They are very well established.
