Please carefully study the publication before contacting the editor. When writing your pitch, be sure to:

  • Carefully study the publication, to get a sense of their style
  • Have a clear idea of where you proposed article will fit into the publication
  • Have a clear sense of the publication’s general schedule
  • Have a clear sense of who the publication’s audience is
  • Choose just one idea to pitch — and make sure it closely fits the publication’s needs
  • Write a short pitch (no more than 200 words)

Apartment Therapy is a home and decor website that features DIY how-to’s, design lessons, expert advice, and shopping guides for creating beautiful homes. They are always looking for fresh ideas and perspectives. They have the following verticals: Home Projects, Lifestyle, News & Culture, Organize & Clean, Real Estate, Style, and Tours. The rates for each vertical are different. For Style vertical, they pay $100 to $500 per assignment. For details, read their Tweet and pitch guide.

Insider’s editor of lifestyle/entertainment is seeking “writers who live in/grew up in Aspen, Las Vegas, Nashville, Orlando, Savannah, & Hawaii.” She is looking to “commission some pieces debunking some popular tourist assumptions/sharing surprising things about living in these popular spots.” Rates begin at $140. Insider is a general interest website. They have made a pitching guide for their digital culture section. The pitching guide says: “If you have a story about how the internet is affecting our lives, or about fascinating goings-on in the digital world, it might be one for us.” They are “open to pitches from and about anywhere in the world.” They offer at least £150 for straightforward, minimum reporting news pieces of less than 600 words. Polygon is Vox Media’s gaming website. Their tabletop editor is seeking pitches for Magic: The Gathering and all other tabletop games. They pay $150 to $300 per piece. For their Black History Month issue, they are seeking “op-eds, personal reflections, community profiles, and other content that speaks to the diverse Black student community experiences at U of T.” They will pay $150 for feature articles (2,000 words) and $75 for other articles (600-800 words). Knock LA is a community journalism project that is committed to telling the real story of Los Angeles. They are seeking pitches from journalists in Los Angeles. Their baseline rate is “$125 to $200 for longform reporting, deep dives, and investigative essays (>1200 words).” They are also seeking shorter, breaking news pitches. New Scientist is a weekly science and technology magazine. Their head of features is looking to broaden their pool of neuroscience/brain/mind/mental health writers so she is open to pitches. Elite Daily is an online news platform for millennials. They are “now accepting pitches for thoughtful and timely essays/reported pieces/reactions on TV shows, movies, songs, albums, celebs, entertainment trends, and influencers making an impression on you/Gen Z.” They are generally not seeking roundups or watchlists. Anime Herald is a website that offers news, reviews, interviews, and commentary on anime and anime fandom. They are looking for articles, “especially interviews and pieces on the greater fandom.” They pay $50 per article (1,000 to 2,000 words). Globe Magazine is Boston Globe’s weekly magazine. They inform, entertain, and inspire readers in New England and the rest of the world. Their newly appointed editor has tweeted, “Please send pitches, story ideas, and recommendations for your favorite New England writers.” They usually pay $1 per word for features. The Appeal is “a worker-led nonprofit newsroom dedicated to exposing how the U.S. criminal legal system fails to keep people safe and, instead, perpetuates harm.” They are looking for 2 freelance writers to each contribute 1 newsletter a month. Opportunity to Write Neighborhood Guides for Mexico City, Honolulu, and Lisbon: “I’m seeking local experts to write neighborhood guides for Mexico City, Honolulu, and Lisbon. This project is for the launch of a new startup targeting professional remote workers, so knowledge of coworking spaces is a plus!” Budget is $400 for a 2,000-word guide. They are looking for photographers and freelance writers who are interested in Houston’s food and dining scene. For writers, the base rate is $100+ and for photographers, the base rate is $200. Their TV recaps editor is seeking culture writers to assign recaps for the following series:  Snowfall Season 5, Atlanta Season 3, Bridgerton Season 2, Pachinko, and Moon Knight. The Donald W. Reynolds National Center for Business Journalism offers business journalism training to journalists. They’re looking for freelance business journalists for businessjournalism.org. They want the freelancers to “pitch and develop feature articles that are tied to the latest happenings in the news cycle and include tips, career advice, and/or other resources for fellow business writers to improve their reporting.” Some of the topics they’re specifically looking for are:

Ladies Who Leverage Magazine is “a global women’s community of empowered women who leverage their expertise, resources, and relationships to build their business, brand, and badassery.” They are looking for pitches for the April issue of their digital magazine. Atlas Obscura is a guide to the hidden wonders of the world. Gastro Obscura is their food/drink vertical. Atlas Obscura and Gastro Obscura are seeking pitches for stories about “women on every continent who have changed the world—both in the past and in the present.” They are seeking these stories for Women’s History Month. They are particularly interested in hearing from women of color, LGBTQ community, and other underrepresented groups. Their rates start at $300 and they usually pay around $0.50 per word. Tom’s Guide is a website that covers all things consumer tech. Their auto editor is looking for freelancers who know about electric cars to help them grow their Automotive channel. They are especially looking for “people who can help cover news in the UK AM, but feature writers and interesting pitches are also welcome.” They pay $80 for a news story of 300+ words and around $300 for a feature of around 1,000 words. They are “looking for Dataco accredited London-based football freelancers to work between Jan 31 and Feb 11, including the FA Cup fourth round weekend and midweek PL games.” They will pay £100 to £150 per shift. Huck Magazine celebrates and explores “independent culture – people and movements that paddle against the flow.” Their editor is accepting pitches for their Spring-Summer issue and is looking for:

Economic Hardship Reporting Project (EHRP) is a nonprofit organization that produces compelling journalism about income inequality and poverty in America. They are seeking idea-driven features and op-eds with the theme “Re-envisioning Capitalism.” They want pitches that argue radical, possible economic shifts. They welcome scholars. For features, the rate is $1/word (up to 2,500 words). For op-eds, the rate is somewhat less. They are currently accepting submissions for their Spring 2022 issue: Manifestation & Movement.
