30 Calls for Pitches Directly from Editors

Here’s our latest roundup of calls for pitches directly from editors and publishers.

You’ll note that payment rates vary significantly; some of these publishers pay just $50 per article, while others pay $1,000 or more.

Also, please do not contact these publishers unless you are confident that you can write a high-quality pitch. If you’re still learning, I recommend watching this free lecture.

Refinery29 UK is a media and entertainment company that focuses on young women. Their lifestyle director is looking for story pitches about dating experiences post-lockdown. According to a now-deleted Tweet by one of their editors, they pay £180 for an opinion piece and £250 for a feature. If interested, send your pitches to jess.commons@refinery29.uk. gal-dem is a British online and print magazine that is dedicated to sharing the stories of women and non-binary people of color. Their politics editor is seeking more writers of color from marginalized genders across Europe to write features and comment for their politics section. She is especially interested in contributors who can write about Central and Eastern Europe. Payment reports indicate that they pay £70 per piece. If interested, contact moya@gal-dem.com. Wellby is an online publication about modern wellness. They are always seeking smart personal essays/ investigations and reports. The topics that they are most interested in are: “wellness, mental health, spirituality, personal growth and big ideas.” They pay £50 per article. Pitches should be sent to editorial@livewellby.com. The River publishes independent news stories about the Hudson Valley. They are looking for pitches. They are especially interested in housing, health, and justice stories but you can also send “anything enterprising or explainer-y.” The stories must be “based in the Hudson Valley or Catskills, or have an angle pertinent to those regions.” Rate is $0.20 to $0.25 per word. Rest of World is an international nonprofit journalism organization that is focused on “the impact of technology beyond the Western bubble.” Their editor is accepting pitches. The biggest beats that they cover are “social media, ecommerce, labor, and the downstream effects of Big Tech outside the Western world.” Their editor is “especially interested in pitches that are global in nature or connect themes happening in multiple countries.” Their rates start at $1/word. The Narwhal is a non-profit magazine that publishes stories about Canada’s natural world. They are looking to add Black, Indigenous, and racialized journalists to their roster. Their rates start at $0.50 per word. For more information, refer to their Twitter thread, this form, and this page.

GAMINGbible covers gaming news, trends, reviews, opinions, and more. Their head of content is looking for gaming freelancers. They usually pay a flat rate of £100 for pieces of 1,000 words. It’s Freezing in LA! (IFLA!) is an independent magazine about climate change. They are seeking writers, researchers, and journos from “the global majority with interest in writing about climate reparations.” They will pay £150 for 1,200 words. Jacobin is a socialist print magazine (published 4 times a year). Their deputy editor has tweeted, “It’s summer. Jacobin needs socialist summer content. Pitch me about what cool summertime shit should be funded by the government, why everyone deserves publicly funded vacations, why the Left must demand full legalization of fireworks, etc.” According to one payment report, they paid $50 for a 1,000-word op-ed. Bitch Media is a nonprofit, independent, feminist media organization dedicated to providing and encouraging an engaged, thoughtful feminist response to mainstream media and popular culture. Their editor-in-chief has tweeted, “I am still editing Bitch Media’s digital content at the moment, so get in touch if you have ideas about sports, In the Heights, People of Praise and abuse, chronic illness, and We Are the Lady Parts.” She is primarily looking for cultural criticism. Discover Magazine is a print and online science magazine for the general public. Their editor has tweeted, “Science journos, calling for pitches! I edit Discover’s much-loved Vital Signs column, where we take readers through the twists and turns of tricky patient cases. They’re usually written by doctors, but recently we’ve expanded that to include stories from science writers.” “Know of any wild medical mysteries where doctors struggled to figure out what was wrong? Surprising last-minute diagnoses? Cases that shed light on little-known conditions? Pitch me at aorlando@discovermagazine.com.” Their rates start at $1/word and these columns run at 1,200 words. FanSided is a network of fandom-focused sports, lifestyle, and entertainment websites. They are accepting pitches for stories in both their Features and Fan Voices verticals. For the Features vertical, they look for longform pitches that go deeper with stories that their “readers are already familiar with, or introduce them to new characters and corners of the sporting world.” For the Fan Voices vertical, they look for “personal stories about the experiences of fans and how relationships with sports, teams, and athletes have rippled through their lives.” Their rates start at $100 to $150. Extraordinary Experiences Magazine (US) is looking for travel pitches on “unique aspect of Greece; luxe Caribbean; miracles of nature, like Northern Lights, etc.; gems of the Pacific (Hawaii, etc.); wildlife expeditions.” They will pay $400 for 800 words. For more information, refer to this Tweet.

TasteToronto is an online community that connects food lovers to the hottest restaurants, dishes, and events in Toronto. They are looking for part-time freelance writers (preferably Toronto-based or in the GTA) to tell stories about Toronto’s food scene. Rate is $15 to $30 for short and buzzworthy news (one or less interviews, 200 to 300 words) and $60 to $100 for more researched stories (650 to 800+ words). They are looking for the latter i.e. more researched stories. There is no definitive application deadline but try to apply before the end of June. Sister amplifies the voices of gender minorities in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math). They are accepting pitches for essays and op-eds (700 to 1,000 words) for their special series: Gatekeeping in STEM. They are seeking perspectives from gender minorities in STEM. Fodor’s Travel is a source for expert travel advice. Their newly appointed editor is looking for travel stories. According to their pitching guidelines, they love buzzy, zeitgeist-y, and newsworthy stories that are told with a bold voice. Rate: $250 to $400 per story. Inkcap Journal is a publication focused on nature and conservation in Britain (England, Wales, and Scotland). They are looking for writers who are “interested in taking commissions from time to time.” They are also always accepting pitches and are especially interested in stories from Wales and Scotland. Dirt is a morning newsletter that “covers ‘entertainment’: the wide realm of streaming, Twitch, TikTok, and all kinds of digital culture.” They are looking for smart and funny takes (500 words) on “entertainment and streaming culture — whether that’s TikTok, The Sims, Spotify, or even furniture.” They pay $1 per word and a 25% kill fee. The Institute for Science & Policy is “a catalyst for solving problems through civil dialogue and scientific thinking.” They are looking for contributor essays (1,000 to 1,200 words) inspired by the following: “What would a truly equitable approach to climate policy look like? What are the economic and social tradeoffs to consider? How do cultural values help or hinder us? And how can science inform outcomes that are more inclusive?” They will pay $500 per essay. Strikewave is a publication and newsletter that covers the latest of the shop floor struggle. They are looking for pieces (800-1,200 words) that “focus on the state of labor in the U.S. and abroad, strategy, and specific labor struggles.” They publish “analysis, reported essays, interviews, and longform articles from an explicitly militant pro-labor, pro-worker perspective.” Rate is at least $400 per submission. Quartz Creative is the in-house arm of Quartz. They provide insightful stories on behalf of their commercial partners. They are looking for freelance copywriters for long-form content. They want freelancers who have branded content experience and are knowledgeable about technology, finance, sustainability, and the like. They will pay about $1,000 per piece. Global Ideas is a multimedia project by Deutsche Welle. They report on biodiversity conservation and solutions to the climate crisis. They are seeking feature pitches (in English or German) on the environment and climate change. They like “stories that shed light on creative and effective solutions, give a voice to the marginalized, show how policies are playing out on the ground and matter to people’s lives, or tell a story from an unusual perspective.” They pay 377 euros per feature (800-1,000 words). The Dance Current is a Canadian dance magazine. They publish 4 times a year. They are accepting pitches for features, personal essays, poetry, and photo essays from writers or artists in Canada. The Inspired Source is a solutions-focused opinion piece series by EachOther (a UK-based human rights project). They are looking for pitches: “If you have something to say about Twitter or social media being a space for human rights (good or bad), and can trust yourself to turn it around quickly, we’d love to hear from you!” They will prioritize emerging writers from marginalized backgrounds. The Guardian is a British news and media website. Their commissioning editor, global development has tweeted, “Looking for unreported stories behind the headlines.
