28 Calls for Pitches Directly from Editors

The following is a list of calls for pitches directly from editors and publishers.

We’ve included payment rates when available, as well as contact information. You’ll notice that payment rates vary widely; anywhere from pennies for word, to $1.50 per word.

Sourced is “a public research project aimed at developing lines of inquiry into our relationships with food and drink.” They are seeking “an academic-minded / interview based piece focusing on food traditions, origin stories and ingredient of nostalgia. GEN is a publication by Medium about politics, power, and culture. They are looking for pitches for their new series, How I Got Radicalized. They want stories about “a cultural moment—a TV show, commercial, character, song, book, musical, so on—that made you drastically rethink how society works.” They will pay about $600 to $800 per piece. The Face is a British magazine that covers style, music, TV, film, fashion, culture, and more. They are seeking pitches on “Panda Girl, Leeds United, Alfresco Covid winters, Dennis Skinner, Zoom fashion, and image-conscious youth.” According to payment reports, they pay £150 to £500 for features. Metro.co.uk is looking for opinion pitches on current affairs. They want writers to “find a hook on politics, human interest, health or new stats.” They do not want week-old news angles. New Socialist is a Britain-based online socialist magazine. They are accepting submissions for their next edition, “Ecology”. They are also accepting book reviews and contributions to “Culture is Ordinary” and “Transmissions” series. They are particularly interested in submissions from writers from oppressed, exploited, and marginalized groups. They pay £50 for transmissions and other short pieces. HuffPost UK Opinion is a section in HuffPost UK that offers commentary and analysis on the biggest talking points of the day. They are always seeking timely, news-pegged pitches. They commission every day and especially encourage pitches from writers from diverse backgrounds. Their published pieces are generally around 800 words. Sustainability Action Network is a new solutions-focused journalism platform that focuses on the future of our planet. They are always looking for pitches on all things sustainability. They do not want stories that report problems within the sphere of climate change, they want stories about active, positive change. They pay £100 per 800 to 1,200 words. Tipping Point is a series by Vice that covers “environmental justice stories about the people and communities experiencing the stark reality of our changing planet.” They are accepting pitches for stories. OpenDemocracy is a global media organization that covers world affairs, ideas and culture. Their editor has “specific commissioning budget for women and LGBTQI writers/journos of colour/from working class backgrounds.” They will pay £100 for a bit of desk-based writing (for example, a comment piece) of 800 to 1,000 words, and £200 for a piece that involves more intense research (for example, interviews). TheSun.co.uk is the digital edition of Britain’s largest newspaper, The Sun. Their acting digital features editor has tweeted, “really keen to hear from any freelancers available to write for us across the board on glam, lifestyle, hard news and investigations.” According to one payment report, they paid £250 for an online feature of 700 words. Ours to Save is a new journalism initiative that focuses exclusively on the climate crisis. They have an interactive map that shows crowdsourced climate news from all over the world. They are accepting pitches for October. They have tweeted, “do you have another perspective on the US election and climate change? let us know. also let us know about all things energy, economy, food and farming, transport and so on.” They pay £30 for short profiles and £80 for longer features. Verywell Health is an online resource for health and wellness information. They are looking for freelancers to cover health news stories. They are not a breaking news site. They “add context and/or actionable steps in response to health news.” They pay $200 for 700-1,000 words, $250 for 1,001-1,500 words, and $300 for 1,501-2,000 words. SFGate covers news and entertainment from the Bay Area and beyond. They are seeking pitches for stories that offer unique perspectives. Their senior health and food editor is seeking a health-care worker (e.g. doctor, nurse, EMT) to write a personal essay about “how they feel the election will affect their lives.” They pay $200 to $400+ per personal essay. They mostly cover “work/money, relationships/sex, mental health/general health, politics, and friendship.” According to payment reports, they pay an average of $0.05 per word. They “love pieces on life behind the headlines, identity, work/life, health, relationships, parenting, and wild transformational experiences.” According to one payment report, they paid £100 for an 800-word personal piece. Variable West is a platform for West Coast art. They are accepting exhibition review and artist interview pitches on the theme of “Staying With the Trouble.” Taken from Donna Haraway’s book “Staying with the Trouble: Making Kin in the Chthulucene,” the phrase encourages us to consider how “[our] task is to make kin in lines of inventive connection as a practice of learning to live and die well with each other in a thick present. Our task is to make trouble, to stir up potent response to devastating events, as well as to settle troubled waters and rebuild quiet places.” They will pay $150 per exhibition review (600 to 800 words). The exhibition must take place in California, Oregon, or Washington. They will pay $150 per artist interview (2,000 words). The artist must be living or working in California, Oregon, or Washington. Paper Plane is a twice-monthly newsletter that features original stories from journalism students in Canada. They are accepting pitches. We Need Diverse Books (WNDB) is a nonprofit organization that promotes diversity in children’s literature. They are looking for pitches for Native American and Indigenous Heritage Month. They want pitches from Native/Indigenous/First Nations writers. The pitches don’t have to be tied to the writer’s identity. They are primarily seeking “pitches for feature stories, opinion pieces, personal essays, and service journalism, related to children’s and YA books, the publishing industry, bookselling, librarianship, etc.” Rates start at $150. Passage is a Canadian leftist opinion/analysis publication. Their managing editor is looking for pitches. They mainly have a Canadian focus and only publish opinion and analysis. They never publish right wing views. For shorter opinion pieces of 750 to 1,200 words, they pay $100 CAD. For longer features of 1,500 to 2,000 words, they pay $250 CAD.
