Lifewire is a website that publishes tech news, reviews, how-tos, and more. They are looking for experienced tech writers to help them out with their buying guide updates. Futurism covers science, technology, and medicine news that are changing the world. Their managing editor is looking for pitches this week on space travel, genetics, brain-computer interfaces, environment and climate, and robots. Tom’s Guide covers all things consumer tech including smartphones, cameras, wearables, video games, TVs, and drones. They publish news, product reviews, guides, price comparisons, and more. Insider is a global news publication. Their commissioning editor has tweeted, “I’m keen on hearing people’s business pitches on International Women’s Day, which is next Monday (March 8).” “And every week I’m going to give a subject that’s particularly got me thinking and I’m keen for pitches on. The Muse is an online career platform that is a go-to destination for people to research companies and careers. They are seeking some new freelance writers with experience in journalism, “especially those who have written service journalism and/or have covered topics related to job search, work, careers, or diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI).” Bonus points if the candidates have “firsthand experience working in HR, recruiting, career coaching, college career services, DEI consulting or training, or similar!” They will pay $150 to $400 for most assignments. Eater Philly (a part of the Eater network of sites) is a local news site that reports on restaurants, dining, bars, and chefs in Philadelphia. They are looking for new contributors. They publish news, dining guides and maps, reported features, and opinion pieces. According to payment reports, Eater pays an average of $0.37 per word. Southerly is an independent media organization that covers ecology, culture, and justice in the American South. They are looking for someone who wants to report on Jackson’s ongoing water crisis. Portland Monthly is a magazine that covers food, style, shopping, arts, culture, travel, and more in Portland, Oregon. Their arts & culture editor has tweeted, “Hello gay Portland!! I’m editing a Pride feature for Portland Monthly’s summer issue, and I am accepting pitches NOW. Queer/trans writers to the front. Profiles, historical narratives, previews of any Pride events that might move fwd this year: send ’em to creed@pdxmonthly.com.” Rate is about 60/70 cents per word. Well+Good covers fitness, cutting-edge nutrition, natural beauty, travel, and more. They are “accepting a few more pitches for Women’s History Month.” They are seeking “women and gender nonbinary people to write letters to the women who have inspired and influenced them.” No moms or grandmas. Teachers, mentors, friends, and historical/public figures are all fair game. Rates start at $300. Pitches should be sent to abbey.stone@wellandgood.com. That’s Life is a London-based true life magazine. Their features writer has tweeted, “I’m in need of real-life health stories to feature in TL! Have you overcome an unusual or life changing condition? Do you have a unique or rare health issue? Beer Kulture is a nonprofit that is “building trust & strengthening communities by using craft beer to foster inclusion, equity & diversity.” They are accepting pitches for their blog. In their blog, they share the world experience from an unfiltered perspective – raw, uncut, and real. They encourage pitches from “Black, African American, Hispanic, Native North American, and Pacific Islander and other BIOPIC kandidates.” They pay $150 to $200 per post. Borderless Magazine is a nonprofit online publication that covers labor, justice, and advocacy issues affecting the Midwestern immigrant communities. They are seeking immigration-related stories with a Midwestern connection. They especially encourage pitches from the immigrant communities. Their rate for reported stories starts at $250. Documented is a non-profit news website that covers New York’s immigrants and the different policies that affect their lives. They are always looking for pitches about: “NYC mayoral primaries; labor issues for farmworkers, delivery people, taxi drivers, etc.; how NYC policies & ICE enforcement are affecting local immigrants.” They pay $0.50 per word. Lady Latitudes is a travel blogazine featuring kitsch, curios, and Canadiana. They are looking for pitches about Canadian travel and Northern living. They pay $100 for features, $80 for short articles, blog posts or personal essays, and $50 for reviews. They prioritize emerging, unpublished, under-published and/or underrepresented voices. African Arguments is a pan-African platform that analyzes issues facing the continent, investigates the stories that matter, and amplifies a diversity of voices. They are seeking pitches on art, (sub) cultures, and lifestyle across the continent. They have tweeted, “We want stories, photo essays, podcasts, data ideas on Amapiano x Afrobeats crossovers, LGBTQIA+ life, TikTok, Shitor v. Yaji, natural hair, literature, gender-bending comedy, Gen Z, Nollywood, and every other African film industry, Ousmane Sembene, music streaming, the rise of portraiture in visual art, indigenous African sports, Whatsapp for good, bad, and impressionable mothers, intra-African migration/travel, fashion, sex, restitution of African artefacts, chess prodigies, Rumba, architecture, women thriving, theatre, MORE! The Progressive is a monthly magazine and a website that is a “bold voice for peace, social justice, and the common good.” Their web editor is looking for writers especially BIPOC, LGBTQ+, non-binary, gender-nonconforming, disabled, and immigrant. Youth Music is the UK’s largest music charity for young people (aged 0-25). They are looking for young music journalists aged 18-25 to produce 1-2 articles per month that spotlight emerging artists and local music scenes, demystify the music industries through interviews, and cover social justice issues that impact the music sector. They will pay a flat rate of £90 per article. The writers will produce at least 4 articles during the 4 month appointment (3 May 2021 to 31 August 2021). The position is freelance and remote. Pursuit of Hoppiness is a website that offers craft beer news and reviews. Their editor is looking for beer writers. He is also looking for a Dunedin-based freelance writer for a story. Culture Days celebrates arts and culture in Canada. They are looking for pitches for their Culture 365 blog. The theme is RE:IMAGINE. Their call for writers says, “The arts emerged as a lifeline of joy, hope and reprieve needed to make it through this past year. Collectively, we’re imagining what a post-pandemic world could look like and how we can each contribute to that picture being brighter. Through that lens, Culture Days has chosen RE:IMAGINE as the very apt 2021 theme. With an understanding that we cannot return to how things were, RE:IMAGINE signals a positive turning point that acknowledges a desire to forge new ideas and break new ground.” They are seeking both English and French pieces. Zimmerit is a website about old otaku. They are looking for pitches. Their pitch guidelines say, “Your pitch should have some connection to Japanese subculture fandom of the ’70s, ’80s, or ’90s. Articles about anime, model kits, toys, fandom, and doujinshi are all great but don’t be afraid to send us off-the-wall ideas, too. Subjects that have never been covered in English or are not well known among English-speaking fans are greatly preferred.” They pay a flat rate of $50 per article (1,000 words). The Union of Concerned Scientists is a nonprofit organization that uses science to solve the planet’s most pressing problems. They are seeking pitches from scientists and experts for their new blog series. They want “pieces that share the lived experiences of scientists, and make the case for actions that scientists, institutions, or elected officials can take to use science for the public good.” They encourage pitches from early career scientists as well as scientists from marginalized backgrounds.
