Please carefully study the publication before contacting the editor. When writing your pitch, be sure to:

  • Carefully study the publication, to get a sense of their style
  • Have a clear idea of where you proposed article will fit into the publication
  • Have a clear sense of the publication’s general schedule
  • Have a clear sense of who the publication’s audience is
  • Choose just one idea to pitch — and make sure it closely fits the publication’s needs
  • Write a short pitch (no more than 200 words)

FanSided is a network of fandom-focused sports, lifestyle, and entertainment websites. They are accepting pitches for their two feature series: FanSided Features and Fan Voices. Their deputy editor, features has tweeted: “Looking for stories on: justice, politics, health, environment and culture, as relevant to 30+ Canadian women. Feature pitches especially appreciated!” “I’m always interested in thoughtful, less obvious Canadian politics stories, any stories of queer and trans joy, and alternative justice stories.” They pay $1 CAD per word for print and $300-$800 for online stories. Android Central is a source for information on Android devices. They are expanding their news team and are looking for “U.S. (or North America)-based freelance writers who are passionate about all things Google and Android.” They pay $20 to $50 for news, $30 for deals, $40 to $140 for help & how-to content, $120 to $500+ for editorial content, $100 for product / game previews, $120 to $500 for product / game reviews, and $70 to $350 for buyer’s guides. New Scientist is a weekly science and technology magazine. Their comment page editor is seeking ideas for opinion pieces from science writers/scientists/academics. Economic Hardship Reporting Project (EHRP) is a nonprofit organization that produces compelling journalism about income inequality and poverty in America. They are seeking story pitches from freelance housing reporters. Some topics that they especially want to examine are: the eviction crisis, foreclosure, and tenant protections. Reader’s Digest is a general interest family magazine. They are looking for funny stories. They pay $100 for true funny stories (200 words max) published in their print edition. The Texas Faculty Association (TFA) is a non-profit organization that is dedicated to protecting “the rights of higher education faculty and support staff.” They are accepting freelance submissions (400-600 words) from both TFA members and non-members. The requested topics are: “administrative bloat at Texas colleges/universities in the past 5-10 years, the great disengagement of higher ed (may include mental health or Covid), higher ed faculty organizing efforts in states with no collective bargaining, & issues facing contingent faculty.” Rate is $200 per article. They are “soliciting pitches for a package that examines what ‘feminism’, ‘womanhood’, and ‘women’s history’ means to you in 2022—be that good, bad, or complicated.” They want personal takes on these topics/terms. Advanced Science News is a website by Wiley that covers the latest science news. They are seeking a freelance writer who will be responsible for pitching, researching, and writing weekly news articles as well as other feature-length content that covers new developments in the scientific community. Popsugar Australia’s gaming vertical “taps into games as a form of social escapism, self-care, and sense of community.” They are currently seeking feature article pitches for a special project about accessibility in games. They want to “celebrate the ways games are becoming more accessible for players, interrogate the reasons some games are still failing their players, and publish people with disability who are gamers.” They will pay between $250 and $500 AUD per submission. Their senior culture editor is seeking “culture, trend, internet, and/or fandom analysis stories (not reviews)” about Euphoria, Genshin Impact, Pokemon Arceus, and Five Nights at Freddy’s. Headway is The New York Times’ new section that explores “the world’s challenges through the lens of progress.” They are looking for stories: “special call for journos to revisit stories about change makers you’ve previously reported.” They are seeking 3 types of stories: cover stories (4,000-7,000 words); visual and interactive stories; and supporting pieces (500-1,500 words). For supporting pieces, they are looking for ideas around: waste and circularity; alleviating poverty; and past, present, and future of plastics. Rate is $1 to $2 per word. JSTOR Daily is JSTOR’s digital magazine that provides scholarly context to news and current affairs. They are actively accepting feature pitches for their American Prison Newspapers collection. The collection contains “centuries of digitized newspapers produced by and for incarcerated people.” Features can be “based on things mentioned in the archive explicitly, implicitly, or something that may be inferred.” Rate is $400 to $500 for full-length well researched features. CafeMom is a website for mothers and mothers-to-be. Their managing editor is looking for any mom writers who want to explain NFTs.
