Please carefully study the publication before contacting the editor. When writing your pitch, be sure to:

  • Carefully study the publication, to get a sense of their style
  • Have a clear idea of where you proposed article will fit into the publication
  • Have a clear sense of the publication’s general schedule
  • Have a clear sense of who the publication’s audience is
  • Choose just one idea to pitch — and make sure it closely fits the publication’s needs
  • Write a short pitch (no more than 200 words)

Fashionista is a source of information on fashion industry news, designers, and runway shows. They are looking for new writers so if you have a feature idea, then get in touch with their editor-in-chief at tyler@fashionista.com. Their editor-in-chief wants fashion and beauty stories and stories about “brands/people/trends not getting much coverage elsewhere.” She doesn’t want shopping and styling stories. Refinery29 UK is a media and entertainment company that focuses on young women. Their entertainment editor has tweeted, “Any unique takes on film/tv/entertainment valentine’s day pitches – please send my way!” They usually pay £180 to £250 per piece. Kotaku is a gaming news and tips website by G/O Media. Their editor-in-chief is looking for pitches on: Valorant, Apex Legends, Halo Infinite, FF14, Genshin Impact, Mario Kart Tour, Pocket Camp, Fire Emblem Heroes, New Horizons, Scrabble, Pokémon Masters EX, and Pokémon Go. Rate starts at $300, can be more depending on reporting, topic, etc. Reported pieces are more likely to get accepted. They cover “everything from music and beauty to personal essays, opinion and interviews with extraordinary women.” They are commissioning for March/April. They welcome pitches in the following areas: The Self, Business, Relationships, Pop Culture, Current Affairs, Fiction, and Anon. They actively look for pitches from BAME and new writers. The Luupe is a platform and community that helps brands connect with women and non-binary photographers. For their online magazine, they are “bringing on freelance writers on a rolling basis to contribute stories and conversations about women + non-binary individuals and creative/brand/marketing culture.” They pay around $150 for short pieces/ straight Q+A’s and up to $650 for longer pieces. Briarpatch is a Canadian magazine of politics and culture. They are accepting pitches for their unthemed July/August issue. They are seeking “investigative journalism, interviews, feature articles, narrative reporting, project profiles, comics and graphic texts, book reviews, and photo essays that are rooted in anti-colonial, anti-capitalist, feminist struggle.” They pay $150 for profiles, short essays, reviews, and parting shots (usually 1,500 words or less); $250 for feature stories (usually 1,500 to 2,000 words) and photo essays; and $350 for research-based articles and investigative reporting (usually 2,000 to 2,500 words). Select (on NBC News) offers gift ideas, product reviews, deals and discounts, and consumer shopping tips. They are accepting pitches: “Select is accepting pitches, from short and simple personal recommendations to reported guides (we’re focused on tech and wellness). We’re also looking for recs that reflect realities for BIPOC shoppers that may not fit neatly into the above.” Their rates start at $250. Digital Spy is the United Kingdom’s biggest TV and movies site. Their acting deputy TV editor is always accepting pitches about your favorite shows. If you have a unique angle on something that has aired recently, then get in touch at tpearce@digitalspy.co.uk. According to payment reports, they pay £70 to £90 for comment pieces (about 700 words).
