24 Calls for Pitches Directly from Editors and Publishers

Dear Writers,

Here’s our latest calls for pitches directly from editors and publishers. We’ve included payment rates for all of these publications and found editorial contact information, to make it easier for you to connect with the right publisher.

Keep in mind, you’ll still need to write a good pitch before getting published by these publications. If you’re not sure how to do that, watch this free video.

  • The Heart of the Hotel is a website that aims to “highlight those employees who truly elevate the guest experience, not because it’s their job but because genuine service and connection is simply a part of who they are as a person.” Their founder has tweeted, “Hey writers pitch me stories rooted in kindness and connection for my travel site The Heart of the Hotel, where we honor hotel employees who are the heart of our travel experience.” They pay $100 for 500 words (stories can be longer if writers desire).   • WordWorks is British Columbia’s magazine for writers. They are accepting pitches from BC & Yukon writers for their next volume which will focus on mental health and wellness for writers. Pitches for articles could include these themes (though they encourage out-of-the-box thinking): “self-care for writers, coping with impostor syndrome, the effects of isolation on one’s writing practice, perfectionism, writing through depression, and so much more.” Articles may “range from one-page in length, around 500 words, to a two-page feature of approximately 1,000 words.” They pay $0.25/word for original articles and $50 for reprints.   • Best Health Magazine is a Canadian health and wellness magazine for women. Their newly appointed managing editor is looking for stories ranging from “expert-backed listicles to in-depth features and fresh first-person essays.” They are open to writers from anywhere in the world but the stories must focus on Canadian voices and issues.   • Midwesterner is a newsletter that features “short stories about food and agriculture in the American Midwest.” They are seeking pitches about the American Midwest. They pay $250 per piece.   • The Boutique Handbook is “a digital magazine for all things chic, featuring the best in travel, food & drink, lifestyle and shopping.” They are looking for freelance pitches for travel content. Pitches must be related to the UK and have a boutique angle. Pitches that they are specifically looking for (open to more) include: “UK area guides, cities and holiday destinations; secret UK spots only locals know about; staycation swaps e.g. Hove instead of Brighton.” They can pay 14p ($0.20) per word.   • MIT Technology Review is a media company that explains the commercial, political, and social impact of the newest technologies. Their commissioning editor is “assigning stories about computing in its many forms: supercomputers, quantum computers, the cloud, chips, AI, and oh so much more.” Their rates start at $1 per word.   • Stylist Magazine is a weekly magazine and a website for smart, successful, and sophisticated women. Their fitness editor is looking for lesbian/bi fitness freelance writers.   • It’s Freezing in LA! (IFLA!) is an independent magazine about climate change. They are accepting pitches for their issue 8. They are looking for “critical articles, slow journalism features, interviews and essays that explore the environmental implications of the term ‘borders’.” They will pay £150 per 1,200 words.   • Budget Travel is a website that empowers consumers to travel the world on any budget. They are seeking 1,000 to 1,500-word pieces detailing travel in America in 2021. Their content is “focused on finding great deals, traveling smart, traveling post-pandemic, and finding great things to do across the USA.” Their rates start at $0.20 per word.   • Gawker is a gossip blog. They are relaunching. Their features editor has tweeted, “Officially open for features pitches! Not looking for anything super newsy at this time but if there’s something you’ve wanted to write for ages and haven’t because you’re not sure who would take a chance on it I want to hear from you!” They will pay $0.33/word for non-reported pieces and $0.50/word for reported pieces.   • Scuba Diving Magazine is a publication that delivers cutting-edge scuba diving gear, travel, and training information. They are looking for story pitches. The digital stories that they publish generally fall into these categories: travel, news, animal encounters, training, gear, and conservation. Their digital rates start at $0.25 per word.   • mater mea is “a platform that answers Black moms questions about parenting, life, and career through content and community.” They are seeking personal essays and reported features, especially from queer parents.   • Travel + Leisure is a travel magazine. Their editor has tweeted, “I’m now editing the front-of-book opener section at T+L and am always taking pitches for newsy bits, Q&As, style roundups, neighborhood maps, etc etc. ESPECIALLY outside of the coasts and W.   • Insider is a global news publication. They are seeking “someone who came out as queer during quarantine and plans to visit a queer bar/event for the first time this month.” They want someone who will be comfortable writing about it and also potentially getting photographed.   • Tone Madison is a website that covers music and culture in Madison, Wisconsin. They accept “pitches for reported pieces and commentary on culture and politics in the Madison area.” They pay $150 to $300 for reported features.   • Youth Today is an independent media publisher that covers issues related to youth development, adolescent health, juvenile justice, education, and more. They are looking for freelance journalists for child and youth welfare-related stories. They are especially looking for New Mexico-based writers and photographers for special project. Their stories are “always about change — and the people who are altering the world for better or worse.” Their stories are usually between 1,000 and 1,500 words. According to payment reports, they pay up to 35p per word for features. Pitches should be sent to mattr@wired.co.uk.   • InStyle is the leading website for celebrity style. Their deputy editor has tweeted, “Call for pitches, Olympics edition!
