New Scientist is a weekly science and technology magazine. They are looking to expand their pool of regular freelancers. Rest of World is an international nonprofit journalism organization that is focused on “the impact of technology beyond the Western bubble.” Their managing editor is looking to assign stories for September and October. They publish longer features (3,000 words and up), mid-length features (less than 2,000 words), profiles (about 1,500 words), and short front-of-the-book pieces (700 to 1,000 words). The Guardian’s editor of special series has tweeted, “we’re seeking diverse reporters to cover US animal agriculture for our Animals Farmed series – labor conditions, animal welfare, Covid, climate/enviro impacts, import/export trends, Big Ag, lobbying.” They will pay $0.50 per word. Under the Sun is an in-house publication by ReVision Energy (an employee-owned solar company) that “seeks to guide its readership to a deeper understanding of solar energy technology, and the larger issues surrounding the transition to a world powered by 100% renewable energy.” To amplify BIPOC voices, they are launching a new column in their monthly newsletter. They will consider “a wide range of pitches that touch on relevant topics, including energy sovereignty, sustainable food systems, historic injustices in the environmental/climate movement, and visions for a sustainable planet and livable communities.” They will pay $0.50 per word for editorial pieces of 500 to 1,000 words. Oregon Humanities Magazine is a triannual publication that “connects Oregonians to ideas that change lives and transform communities.” They are accepting submissions for their fall/winter 2020 issue on the theme “feed.” They are seeking stories about “food, consumption, nourishment, and sustenance.” They accept all forms of nonfiction writing. Current Affairs is a magazine of political commentary and analysis. They are accepting pitches. Their main articles for the print edition are around 3,000 to 4,500 words while online articles are around 1,200 to 2,400 words. They pay $250 for print articles and $150 for online articles.
