21 Calls for Pitches Directly from Editors & Publishers

Here’s a big list of publishers calling for submissions/pitches directly from writers.

We’ve found payment rates, contact information, etc from all of these publishers.

Insider and Business Insider’s editor is looking for story pitches. They pay $200 to $800 per story. If interested, email your story pitches to ehonan@businessinsider.com. For details, refer to their editor’s Twitter thread. To learn how to write for them, refer to this page.

Social Works? Open is a journal about social practice art. They are commissioning 5 long texts (no more than 2,000 words), 5 short texts (no more than 600 words), and 2 word-image contributions (for example, comic strip, ‘zine, photo essay) for their next publication. They will pay £500 for long text, £120 for short text, and £500 for word-image contributions. They welcome submissions on any topic related to social practice but would be particularly interested in proposals that address any of the following: social practice and social distancing; diversity and equality; documenting and archiving social practice; and social practice in museums and galleries. EQ is an online lifestyle magazine that “focuses on dating and relationship advice, as well as digital technology that (promises to) improve the way humans form meaningful connections.” They are looking for regular contributors. Junkee is an Australian pop culture website that covers TV, film, music, gaming, technology, politics, web stuff, and more. Their editor has tweeted, “Next Invasion Day, January 2021, Junkee will once again only be publishing writing from Indigenous writers. While obviously I’m looking for topical pieces, I’m once again looking for pieces across all of Junkee’s regular coverage.” They pay $200 per article (800 to 1,000 words). cinéSPEAK is a community-rooted justice-centered cinema and film journal. They are accepting pitches about the Sundance Film Festival and FilmEx. To the front: “Black, brown and Indigenous women and non-binary-identifying folx.” They will pay a flat rate of $150. There is no minimum word count. Send ideas to info@cineSPEAK.org. The Wall Street Journal’s editor is looking for pitches for small (400-word) stories for their gear and gadgets service vertical. “Pieces should not be advertorial but SHOULD offer ideas, advice or strategies that help readers solve problems in creative ways.” According to payment reports, they pay an average of $0.66 per word. National Geographic is accepting pitches about science, environment, animals, history and culture, travel, and kids and family. According to payment reports, they pay $0.50 to $1.00 per word. To learn more, read their senior executive editor’s Tweet and their pitch guidelines.

5280 is a monthly magazine and website that covers dining, entertainment, culture, arts, lifestyle, and politics in Denver, Colorado. Their newly appointed senior associate editor is accepting story pitches about Colorado / Denver. He will help edit their magazine’s FOB, feature packages, etc. According to payment reports, they paid $0.75/word for a 500-word FOB and $1.25/word for a 3,000-word feature. Anti-Racism Daily is “a daily newsletter that provides education and action to confront racism at work and school.” Their founder has tweeted, “Looking for a writer interested in covering white supremacy in the religious community.” “Religious community is intentionally broad – looking for how racism/white supremacy is affecting your views on religion, affecting your place of worship, conversations with people at places of worship, how your religion upholds white supremacy, etc. etc.” They want a US-based, BIPOC writer. The Lily is a publication by The Washington Post for millennial women. Their deputy editor is accepting pitches. They want to “know how millennial women’s lives are being affected in the realms of health, politics, work, and relationships.” According to one payment report, they paid $400 for a 1,200-word feature. Apartment Therapy is a home and decor website that features DIY how-to’s, design lessons, expert advice, and shopping guides for creating beautiful homes. Their real estate editor would “love to hear any ideas you have about buying or selling a house, renting, moving, and cities/the suburbs!” They usually pay $100 to $150. Liberal Currents is a publication that offers “discussion, elucidation, and defense of liberal principles and institutions.” They are always seeking more contributors. They pay $50 per piece. In general, she is “looking for long-form reported features with a connection to Washington (or the idea of Washington) or a domestic policy angle.” According to payment reports, they pay $500 for a feature. Stylist Magazine is a weekly magazine for smart, successful, and sophisticated women. They are looking to commission fitness writers for their new health and fitness platform. They are especially looking to commission Black and Brown writers. They are focusing on “strength training in general, and looking for long-form pieces and technical articles to help women get stronger – whether that’s a ‘how to improve VO2 Max’, ‘why we need better representation in the industry’; or interview pieces with weight lifters.” They will pay £150 per feature.
