Writers Omi Residency
This residency welcomes published writers and translators of every type of literature. All text-based projects – fiction, non-fiction, theater, film, poetry, etc. – are eligible. It is fully funded, with accommodation, food, local transport and public programming provided. Its alumni list includes bestselling authors, as well as Booker, PEN/Faulkner Award, and Commonwealth Prize winners.

Public Space FellowshipsThis is for writers who have not yet published or been contracted to write a book-length work. They want to seek out and support writers who embrace risk in their work and their own singular vision. The fellows will receive six months of editorial support from A Public Space editors to prepare a piece for publication in the magazine, an honorarium, the opportunity to meet with members of the publishing community, including agents, editors, and published writers, and the opportunity to participate in a public reading and conversation in New York City with A Public Space editors and contributors. Three fellowships will be awarded and international applications are welcome.

Amy Lowell Poetry Travelling Scholarship
This is for American born poet who is willing to spend a year outside the continent of North America. Their guidelines say, “While many recent winners have been published poets, there is no requirement that applicants have previously published their work.”

The Camargo Core Program
This residency at Cassis, France is for artists (including writers and playwrights) and scholars/thinkers, to think, create and connect. Applicants should have a publication and/or grant track record. They welcome spouses/partners and dependent minor children.

Teleport Magazine Short Story Contest
The editor wants science fiction stories for this contest (next year, the entries will be for fantasy). Stories should be 2,000-25,000 words. No YA, tween or children’s stories. Preference is for stories along the lines of Arthur C. Clarke, Philip K. Dick, Issac Asimov, and Robert Heinlein. Space operas and humorous sci-fi like Douglas Adams are welcome.

James Tiptree, Jr Literary Award
This is for a range of disciplines, including writers and artists. If the applicant’s work is changing the way we think about gender through speculative narrative – maybe in a form recognizable as the science fiction and fantasy genre, maybe in some other way – they are eligible. Writers do not have to be a professional or have an institutional affiliation, as they hope to support emerging creators.

Mytherium: The Icarus Contest
They want a short story of up to 5,000 words about the Icarus myth (see website). Their guidelines say, “Your story can be about any aspect of this myth. You can focus on Icarus or Daedalus or another figure. Your story can be set in Ancient Greece, a modern office building (very Labyrinth-like!), or on a spaceship. You can make it a Western or a steampunk.”  Also look at their FAQ for writers.

Benjamin Franklin House Literary Prize
They want fiction or non-fiction of 1,000-1,500 words from young UK-based writers on the relevance of Benjamin Franklin’s relevance in our time. The quote for this year is, “Let all men know thee, but no man know thee thoroughly” (Poor Richard, 1743), and writers are asked to interpret this quote for its significance today. Winning entries will also be published in The Telegraph.

The Carter Brown Mystery Writing Awards
This is a new award for mystery writing, by the Carter Brown Foundation, in conjunction with Brio Books and Stark House Press. The award is for a novella-length adult crime/mystery fiction. The winning entry will be published in the US, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.

These are for young UK poets, for a collection of poems – send up to 30 poems to be considered, published or unpublished.

The Society of Authors: McKitterick Prize
It is given annually to an author over the age of 40 for a fiction novel, published in the UK, or unpublished. The author must not have had a novel published before, barring works for children. For unpublished manuscripts, submit the first 30 pages.

PEN/Robert J Dau Short Story Prize for Emerging Writers
This award recognizes 12 emerging fiction writers for their debut short story published during a given calendar year in a literary magazine or cultural website, and aims to support the launch of their careers as fiction writers. Work must be submitted by editors of eligible publications. Participating publications may be cultural websites, online magazines, or print magazines distributed in the US and the work must be the writer’s debut short story. Stories must have been published or forthcoming in 2018.

Defenestrationism: 2019 Flash Suite Contest
This is a contest for at least three flash fiction pieces that co-relate in some way. Finalists will be published daily on the site, followed by two weeks of Fan Voting – winners will be selected by a judging panel, with Fan Voting counting as an additional judge vote.

Gaius Charles Bolin Dissertation and Post-MFA Fellowships

This is for US writers from underrepresented populations, who must be PhD or recent MFA graduates. Their guidelines say, “Fellows devote the bulk of the first year to the completion of dissertation work—or in the case of MFA applicants, building their professional portfolios—while also teaching one course as a faculty member in one of the College’s academic departments or programs. The second year of residency (ideally with degree in hand) is spent on academic career development while again teaching just one course.”
