Trails is a quarterly, print-only magazine for “the backpacking and trail community.” They’re seeking some pieces for their Issue 13:

- “We need a story for our ‘The Experiment’ column that ties to our ‘endurance’ thread. These 800-word skills stories focus on a particular unique and out-of-the-box backpacking related ‘test’ (like making a piece of gear yourself, catching all your own food on a backpacking trip, or sleeping in a hammock when you normally sleep in a tent). Try it yourself then come back and write a first-person review of how it went and whether or not it was a success. The best pitches for this issue will tie to ‘endurance’ in some way. Economic Hardship Reporting Project is Seeking Stories from Freelance Journalists

Economic Hardship Reporting Project (EHRP) is a nonprofit organization that produces compelling journalism about income inequality and poverty in America. They’re seeking stories from freelance journalists about:

- Immigration raids in Chicago

- The impact of SNAP cuts

- Starbucks boycott and worker organizing

MIT Technology Review is Seeking Pitches on Theme of Nature

MIT Technology Review is a media company that explains the commercial, political, and social impact of the newest technologies. For their upcoming print issue, they’re looking for pitches on the theme of Nature: “Please note we cast a wide net with these themes. With Nature, we're not only looking for stories about ecology and ecosystems, flora and fauna, but about a range of topics related to the natural world and/or the nature of our world. That could include, for example, a physics story. Or something involving human nature.” They’re seeking pitches for longer pieces: “narrative features, compelling investigations, essential profiles, and super-sharp essays, all with a technology angle.” While this pitch call is aimed at journalists, experts with strong ideas are also encouraged to reach out. Oregon Humanities Magazine is Accepting Submissions on the Theme of “Labor"

Oregon Humanities Magazine is a triannual publication that “connects Oregonians to ideas that change lives and transform communities.” They’re open for submissions for their spring issue. The theme is “Labor.” They’re seeking stories about work, effort, and toil. They hope to address work of all kinds: “physical, mental, and emotional, done for money, for pleasure, or for the benefit of our families and communities.” They’re interested in “labor as a collective effort, as in the labor force or the labor movement, as well as individual exertions.” They welcome “all forms of nonfiction writing from Oregon residents, including essays, journalism, criticism, and excerpts from forthcoming or recently published books.” Their features generally range from 1,500 to 4,000 words. Campfire Stories is Seeking Stories about the Oregon Coast

Campfire Stories is “a collection of books and card decks brought to you by Ilyssa and Dave Kyu to inspire deeper connections and storytelling in the outdoors.” They’re looking for nature and place-based stories for their new Oregon Coast collection. The stories should “capture the essence of the region, highlighting the distinctive natural features, flora, fauna, community, history, and experiences of the Oregon Coast.” They accept diverse forms of writing, for example, essays, prose, poetry, ballads, and short stories. Pieces should not exceed 2,000 words.

Transitions is Looking for Pitches About the Balkans

Transitions (TOL) is “a nonprofit organization established to strengthen the professionalism, independence and impact of the news media in the post-communist countries of Europe and the former Soviet Union.” They’re looking for pitches from freelance journalists, photographers, and multimedia creators covering the Balkans:

“We’re looking for original, in-depth reporting that sheds light on key issues shaping the region today. We welcome a range of formats – from written features and video to multimedia and data-driven pieces.

We welcome pitches for:

- Reported features (1,000–1,500 words)

- Photo essays with captions or short accompanying text

- Video or multimedia pieces

- Explainers or visual stories that combine reporting with graphics, data, or maps”
