Here’s our latest roundup of 17 calls for pitches directly from editors. We’ve researched payment rates and found contact information and submission guidelines pages, to make it easier for you to connect with the right editor.

But it’s not always easy to get a pitch accepted.

Sierra Magazine is a print and digital magazine of the Sierra Club (an environmental organization). Their story editor is accepting pitches. They “*mostly* cover US stories, with clear pegs and a conservation focus.” They would “love to see more pitches that merge an approachable, service-y angle with focused reporting.” Digital rates: $350 to $450. TransLash News & Narrative is a personal essay and journalism platform for transgender and gender non-conforming people. They have tweeted, “News & Narrative is accepting pitches for Black History Month and Valentine’s Day. We’re looking for trans & gender nonconforming stories of Black joy, freedom, and embodiment. We’re also calling in Black trans love stories!” Payment is $350 per piece (ideal length: 1,000 words). Pitches should be sent to gabrielle@translash.org. Sliced is a monthly food journalism magazine by Fed (a food startup that offers nutrition-focused meals for specialized diets). Task & Purpose is a website that provides “news, culture, and analysis by and for the military community.” They are seeking “pitches centered around the theme of ‘Christmas in combat’ for the holidays.” They will pay $150 to $200 per piece. Business Insider covers business, financial, and technology news. Their senior editor of freelancers is always seeking new pitches/writers. If you “love tackling topics like retail, tech, transportation, careers, entrepreneurship, economy, and more, and have a story to tell,” then email akalish@insider.com. Rates begin at $300. BioScience is a monthly journal by the American Institute of Biological Sciences. They are commissioning feature stories (3,000 words) for their 2023 line up. Their features are “about the study of biology and experiences of biologists.” They publish one journalistic feature per issue and especially encourage science writers from underrepresented groups to pitch. Madison Minutes is a newsletter about Madison, WI. Their co-founder is seeking pitches for stories about Madison (priority given to service journalism). Their editor (who handles entertainment and pop culture) is seeking new pitches and writers. Rates start at $75 to $100 for short “news” posts (250 to 300 words) and go up for lists and features. Digital Spy is the United Kingdom’s biggest TV and movies site. They are seeking pitches on December releases: Emancipation, Avatar 2, and Glass Onion. They are specifically looking for pitches from underrepresented writers. If interested, send your pitches to ggeisinger@digitalspy.co.uk. Rates will be shared upon email, but previous reports indicate they paid £70 to £90 for comment pieces (about 700 words). Wealth of Geeks is a website that offers tips and tricks to grow your wealth. The website also keeps you up-to-date with tech, gaming, pop-culture, movies, and celebrities. Rest of World is a global nonprofit publication that covers technology beyond the Western bubble. They are commissioning features for the new year. They are seeking longform narrative (generally 3,000+ words) about the impact of technology in “Africa, Asia, or Latin America.” They want local stories with global implications. They are especially interested in stories that fall under the topics of e-commerce, labor, social media, and tech’s long tail. Rates begin at $1 per word. Coda Story reports on global crises that affect our world. They are looking for contributions for their weekly newsletter which will be launched in January. Oregon Humanities Magazine is a triannual publication that “connects Oregonians to ideas that change lives and transform communities.” They are open for submissions for their Spring 2023 issue. The theme of the issue is “Joy and Pain.” They want to “hear stories about experiences that bring both happiness and suffering.” “Consider, for example, the pleasures and burdens of parenthood, the ecstatic highs and lows of adolescence, the satisfaction and bodily harm of physical labor, or any other human endeavor that is at once bitter and sweet.” They only accept work by people who reside in Oregon. Rate is $500 to $1,000. Briarpatch is a Canadian magazine of politics and culture. They are accepting pitches for their unthemed May/June issue: “Ask a burning political question, share an experience with grassroots activism, or dig into an urgent investigation.” They pay $150 for profiles, short essays, reviews, and parting shots (usually 1,500 words or less); $250 for feature stories (usually 1,500 to 2,000 words) and photo essays; and $350 for research-based articles and investigative reporting (usually 2,000 to 2,500 words).
