Here’s the latest calls for pitches directly from editors and publishers. We’ve found editor contact information, researched payment rates, and deadlines (when available), and compiled everything into this list.

Please do not send a pitch to these editors unless you’re confident you’re qualified to write for them.

Bitch Media is a nonprofit, independent, feminist media organization dedicated to providing and encouraging an engaged, thoughtful feminist response to mainstream media and popular culture. They have tweeted, “Submissions for the Plastic issue of Bitch magazine are now open! Whether your idea revolves around Instagram models, Barbie dolls, or sex toys, send us your pitches.” They generally pay $700 to $1,000 for features, $350 for dispatches, and $250 to $700 for culture stories. Deadline: February 22nd, 2021

Wired is a magazine that covers the current and future trends in technology. Their gaming editor is seeking freelance pitches. “If you have a great innovative feature, how-to guide, or community story idea in games or esports,” then send your pitches to saira_mueller@wired.com. Rates for short “minifeatures” start at $3,000 and backchannel features start at $1,000. Rates for other short, online-only content start at $250. Belt Magazine is “an independent digital magazine by and for the Rust Belt and greater Midwest.” They are accepting pitches. Their “readers love stuff related to regional history, architecture, housing and development, music, nature/environment, and movements of any kind (social, labor, justice).” They pay $300 to $1,000 for features (1,200 to 3,000 words), $100 to $200 for essays, $25 to $50 for poems, and $250+ for photo essays. Tispr is “an all-in-one business management worksuite designed for the way that freelancers, independent contractors and small businesses work.” They are seeking someone to write a health-featured piece for their website. The University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) is looking for “a diverse pool of freelance writers with a focus on technology, computing, and engineering to write articles related to UMBC’s College of Engineering and Information Technology. Articles will focus on the College’s new research, publications, and achievements, and may also include teaching, events, and student groups.” Pay will be $350 to $500 per article (650 to 750 words). Preachy is “a place to write and think critically about religion and spirituality, ideology and rhetoric, peace and introspection.” Their co-editor has tweeted, “Pitch us! We’re looking for essays, short stories, interviews, comics, or other creative projects we haven’t thought of yet about spirituality and introspection.” They pay a flat rate of $400 for stories. Saint + Sofia is a sustainable fashion label based in London, England. They are launching a new digital and print magazine that will cover fashion, lifestyle, culture, and sustainability. Their content editor is seeking opinion-led features and long-reads covering fashion and culture, to run in January and February. Bdaily is an online publisher of regional business news in the UK. They are looking for freelance pitches for their new premium platform which is launching in 2021. They want “unique & insightful interviews/op-eds for an engaged audience of SME leaders and entrepreneurs.” This could lead to regular paid work. Rate is £80 per article. Nova Scotia Advocate is a website that provides grassroots news on Nova Scotia. They cover “poverty, ableism, racism, all kinds of unfairnesses, labour, the environment, the arts.” They are looking for writers. They can pay up to $200 per story. The Road to Sound is a blog about experimental music and independent art. Their founder has tweeted, “Looking for a couple of writers to contribute to the ‘other media from/discovered in 2020’ list I will be putting out on The Road to Sound. Briarpatch is a Canadian magazine of politics and culture. They are accepting pitches for their unthemed May/June issue. They are looking for “investigative journalism, interviews, feature articles, narrative reporting, project profiles, comics and graphic texts, book reviews, and photo essays that are rooted in anti-colonial, anti-capitalist, feminist struggle.” They pay $100 for profiles, short essays, book reviews, and parting shots (1,500 words or less); $200 for feature stories (2,000 to 2,500 words) and photo essays; and $300 for research-based articles and investigative reporting (2,500 to 3,000 words). Blocked Party is “a podcast about social media and rejection.” They are seeking some freelancers for their paid guest newsletters for January-March. They would love to hear from women and LGBTQ2S+ writers. They want pieces of at least 750 words. They will pay $50 to $70 per piece. Send pitches to info@blockedparty.com. Fifth Season is a vertical farming company. They are starting a recipe blog that will celebrate “not just the joy of green ingredients, but the stories that are folded into them.” They are accepting pitches on a rolling basis. Institute for Palestine Studies is a source of information and analysis on Palestinian affairs and the Arab-Israeli conflict. They are accepting pitches (news, culture, narrative) that are relevant to Palestine, Palestinian and Israeli affairs, or Arab relations. They pay $100 for 800 to 1,200 words.
