$100 for Personal Essays

Here are six publishers that pay $100 or more for personal essays.

Topics include humor, feminism, Catholicism, love, and more. We’ve found the submission guidelines page for each of these publishers, payment information, etc. Be sure to study each publication carefully before submitting your work.

Enchantress, a new feminist publication, is currently seeking submissions for their second issue. For this issue, they want essays about “experiences that are relatable to our audience of millennial women, but with an interesting, specific twist that makes the story your own.” The essays must be humorous. America Media, is a Catholic Jesuit publication that provides news and analysis for Catholics. They pay for essays on “Faith in Focus,” which start from “personal faith experience.” They also publish opinion essays, scholarly essays, and poetry. To learn more, read their submission guidelines.

The Big Roundtable pays at least $100 for narrative non-fiction. They want true stories grounded in reporting. The length should be between 3,500 and 20,000. After the minimum $100, stories are funded by donations from readers. Some authors have earned several thousand dollars in donations. To learn more, read their submission guidelines.

Modern Love is a regular column published by the New York Times. They are “interested in receiving deeply personal essays about contemporary relationships, marriage, dating, parenthood…” They pay $300 per essay. Travelers’ Tales Collection accepts nonfiction travel essay for consideration in its anthologies. Editors look for personal nonfiction stories reflecting “that unique alchemy that occurs when you enter unfamiliar territory and begin to see the world differently as a result.” Previously published essays are considered. Vox is seeking personal narratives for their “First Person” section. They are seeking “provocative personal narratives that explain the most important topics in modern life. ” Reports indicate they pay around $500 per essay. To learn more, read their submission guidelines.
