11 Publishers Seeking Pitches from Black Writers

Dear Writers,

Here are ten recent calls for pitches and articles directly from editors. All of them are seeking to elevate black voices, particularly on the topic of the recent protests and the Black Lives Matter movement.

Before pitching these editors, please carefully study their publications, and make sure you’re sending them a pitch that closely matches their needs.

Rewire.News is a daily online publication that publishes evidence-based news, commentary, analysis, and investigative reporting on sexual and reproductive health, rights, and justice. Their assignment editor is accepting pitches on motherhood, injustice, and Black lives. Pay: $250 to $300. To learn more, read their editor’s Twitter thread and their pitching guidelines.

The Christian Science Monitor (also known as The Monitor) is an international news organization. They are looking to “hire Black freelance reporters in NYC, Atlanta, Minneapolis, Houston, LA for reporting on current Black Lives Matter/anti-police brutality protests.” They will pay $500 per story. Insider’s editor is accepting essay, analysis, and reporting pitches about the protests and what has happened over the past week. Their rates start at $400. Well+Good covers fitness, cutting-edge nutrition, natural beauty, travel, and more. Their managing editor is accepting wellness pitches related to Black Lives Matter (BLM), Pride, and COVID-19. Prism is a nonprofit that is working in tandem with Daily Kos. They cover voting rights, electoral justice, criminal justice, racial justice, workers’ rights, immigration, the environment, gender and LGBTQIA+ issues, and more. Their managing editor has tweeted: “in moments like this, the voices we most need to hear are those of folks on the front lines.” Therefore, Prism is seeking pitches from Minnesota-based Black journalists, writers, and community members. “The same applies to those in Kentucky & Michigan right now protesting for Breonna Taylor and Sha’Teina Grady El, and anywhere else folks are facing down anti-Black police violence.” Pay: $0.40 per word. The Bold Italic is an online magazine that celebrates the free-wheeling spirit of the Bay Area. Their editor-in-chief is “open to personal essays, reported pieces, round-ups of resources, opinions, and more” from Black writers in California. Pay: $200 to $300. Adventure Journal is an online magazine about outdoor adventure. Their digital editor is looking for Black outdoor writers for “thoughtful essays connecting the protests to the outdoors generally and the outdoor industry.” Pay will be $200 per story. Eureka Street is an online journal published by Australian Jesuits. They are seeking First Nations and Black writers to pitch or place a piece on the Black Lives Matter (BLM) protests and/or prison and police abolition. Pay is $200 per article (600-800 words). The Jewish Telegraphic Agency is seeking essays related to the current protests, from people of color. They generally offers news and analysis on issues of Jewish interest and concern.
