All the magazines in this list pay $200 for at least some articles; some pay considerably more. All of them require you to be familiar with the magazine before you pitch. Many prefer to read queries first, but some accept completed pieces too.

1. Bitch Magazine

This independent, quarterly magazine is a feminist response to pop culture. They welcome well-researched discussion-provoking critical essays, reports and interviews with feminist culture-makers, and book, film and music reviews. They have features, dispatches and Department of Everything columns, and film, music and book reviews. They consider queries as well as finished pieces.

This is a Canadian women’s monthly magazine with various sections and features, and look for articles on everything from politics to engaging profiles to first-person narratives. The magazine has five sections: Style and Beauty, Home, Health, Life and Food, and needs stories in various formats and lengths within each section. The readers are largely women, between ages 25-54.

3. Backwoods Home Magazine

This is a country and self-reliance-oriented magazine specializing in showing people how to build their own home, produce independent energy, grow their own food, and how to make a living without being tied to a city. They also cover related subjects like health, home schooling, recipes, and book reviews. They are not looking at opinion or entertainment, but hard facts about how to do things better. They like straightforward, clear writing and concise writing, like you would find in good newspapers.

This quarterly magazine is for introducing readers to Pennsylvania’s rich culture and historic legacy. Articles are intended for intelligent lay people. Articles on various topics are suitable, including fine arts, heritage foods, oral history and popular culture. They prefer completed manuscripts, but also look at queries.

9. Popular Woodworking Magazine

They accept five features per issue by freelancers. They invite woodworkers of all levels to share articles about their projects and techniques and primarily need how-to articles on woodworking projects, and instructional features dealing with woodworking and techniques. They rarely publish articles about woodworkers and their particular work, and prefer a conversational, informal tone. Pay for features depends on the total package submitted, including its quality, and the writer’s level of woodworking and writing experience. This is a bi-monthly magazine for water color artists of all skill levels. They seek queries for features or columns. Writers are paid depending on length and completeness of the article submitted. For features about artists, they like to match the artist with the writer, but also accept queries for articles about any specific artist whom the writer is in contact with. Writers should be able to write specifically about the artist’s techniques, from the artist’s viewpoint using the language of art.
