10 Fiction Markets Paying $50 to $800

These magazines pay $50 to $800 for fiction. Some also accept other genres, like non-fiction and poetry. – S. Kalekar

The Puritan
This Canadian literary magazine publishes fiction, non-fiction, interviews, reviews, and poetry. They accept a limited number of fee-free submissions every month.
Deadline: 25 March 2022 for Spring issue; reads year-round
Length: Up to 10,000 words for fiction, up to 4 poems; various for non-fiction (see guidelines)
Pay: CAD200 per essay; CAD150 for fiction; CAD100 per interview or review; CAD25 per poem (or page, capped at CAD80)

Weird Horror Magazine
They publish horror and weird fiction. Their reading periods are March and September. Writers get cash payment and two contributor copies.

— Cohesion Press’s SNAFU – Dead or Alive anthology, for weird Western action horror. Pay is AUD0.05/word for stories of 2,000-10,000 words. The deadline is 31 March 2022;
Shredded: A Sports and Body Horror Anthology. Pay is $0.03/word for stories of 2,000-4,500 words, and the deadline is 31 March 2022 for general submissions, and 7 April 2022 for writers from marginalized identities;
— Cemetery Gates Media’s Picnic in the Graveyard anthology, for horror stories taking place in a graveyard/burial place. Pay is $0.07/word for stories of 2,000-4,000 words. The deadline is 1 April 2022; and
Moonflowers & Nightshade, an anthology of Sapphic horror. The anthology “will include a diverse group of stories, including but not limited to stories involving genderqueer, non-binary, BIPOC, genderfluid, lesbian, trans, bisexual, and pansexual characters.” Pay is $0.04/word for stories of 2,000-5,000 words. The deadline is 1 April 2022.)

Event
This Canadian magazine is currently open for fee-free fiction submissions only. “We look for compelling characters and voice, fresh plots, and narratives that move us.” They have a submission cap, and will close earlier than the deadline if that cap is reached. (They’re also open for a non-fiction contest, which has an entry fee.)

Escape Artists: PodCastle
PodCastle is a fantasy magazine from the Escape Artists suite. They publish in audio format, and online. “We’re open to all the sub-genres of fantasy, from magical realism to urban fantasy to slipstream to high fantasy, and everything in between. Fantastical or non-real content should be meaningful to the story.” Writers can submit one original story and one reprint (see ‘multiple submissions’ in guidelines); query before sending reprints of over 6,000 words.

Pay: $0.08/word; $20-100 for reprints

Pulp Literature
For fiction, “We are looking for entertaining, accessible stories.  We do appreciate clever and poetic turns of phrase, but first and foremost we want a story readers can sink into late at night before they go to bed.” They want all genres, not just pulp, including fantasy, romance, mystery, literary, etc., and are looking for both serious and light-hearted stories. Submissions may close earlier than the deadline specified if their inbox fills up (see guidelines). They also accept pitches for graphic novels/illustrations, and submissions of poetry.

Length: Up to 50 pages for fiction (up to 5,000 words have the best chances of publication); up to 3 poems
Pay: $0.05-$0.08/ word for short stories (to 7,000 words),  $0.03-0.06/word between 7,000 and 10,000 words,  and $0.02-$0.04 per word for works over 10,000 words; $25-50 for poetry and interior illustrations; $25-75/page for sequential art (graphic novels and cartoons) and illustrations

Third Flatiron: After the Gold Rush – Future SF, climate change, economics
This is a speculative fiction anthology. Their guidelines say, “Complications of booms and bubbles. Possible topics might include
– Effects of accelerated culture (e.g., what the Internet’s doing to society)
– Ecological consequences caused by human over-expansion, such as climate disasters
– Economics: The Dutch had the tulip craze; California had the Gold Rush (a weird Western might work here.) Today, it’s cryptocurrency and supply chains. In future planets or civilizations, what will become the most valuable commodity?” (They also publish flash humor pieces of up to 1,000 words.)

(Submissions are also open for Parsec, Inc’s Triangulation: Energy anthology, for fantasy, science fiction, weird fiction, and speculative horror submissions about energy, clean energy. Pay is $0.03/word for stories up to 5,000 words. The deadline is 31 March 2022.
Submissions are open for two anthologies from Android Press, too:
Cyberpunk-Solarpunk Anthology, a cyberpunk and solarpunk fiction anthology, deadline 31 March 2022; and
Bioluminescent: A Lunarpunk Anthology, open for lunarpunk fiction and poetry, deadline 30 April. For both calls, they want stories of 500-7,500 words, and pay $0.08/word for fiction.)

This speculative fiction magazine publishes only translated fiction, and fiction written by authors for whom English is not their first language and who reside outside of primarily English-speaking countries (US, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland). Right now, they are looking for work by Ukrainian writers, to publish in their summer issue – see the editor’s Tweet here; there is no deadline specified. They also accept nonfiction pitches.
