These magazines pay $50-400 for fiction. Many also accept other genres, like non-fiction and poetry. They are open now, or will open soon for submissions. – S. Kalekar

Brink Literary Journal: Reverence
This literary journal will soon start reading fiction, non-fiction, poetry, hybrid/cross-genre work, and translations on the ‘Reverence’ theme. They also accept artwork.

Cthulhu FhCon, a shared-world anthology by Impulsive Walrus, a speculative fiction publisher – the setting is a hotel in the middle of the river, but unknown to anyone but its mad designer, this hotel was built as an altar to the Old God that rests under the dark, flowing current – and this is the place where fans throw a con; interaction between the Lovecraftian-style Old God in the river and the convention must be a focal part of the story; pay is at least $0.03/word for stories of 2,000-6,000 words, deadline 15 April 2022;

Mud Season Review
They accept submissions of fiction, non-fiction, and poetry – they have both fee-free and paid categories. Certain categories may close early, depending on volume.

ShortStory
This is a Substack newsletter, which paying subscribers can get full access to. Each newsletter contains one story – the payout for the author whose story is chosen will be $100, and 50% of subscription revenue. (They publish stats for the previous month’s payout). They also accept reprints. They have rolling deadlines; they accept stories through the month, and the chosen writer/story is announced by the 15th of next month.

The Threepenny Review
This respected literary magazine publishes fiction, nonfiction (including critical articles and memoir), poetry, and Table Talk pieces. They accept submissions through their online submission system and also by mail.
Deadline: 30 April 2022
Length: 1,200 to 2,500 words for critical articles; up to 1,000 words for Table Talk items; up to 4,000 words for stories and memoir; up to 100 lines for poetry Pay: $200 per poem or Table Talk piece; $400 for fiction and nonfiction

khōréō

This is a magazine of speculative fiction and migration, and they accept work only from those who identify as an immigrant or member of a Diaspora in the broadest definitions of the terms (see guidelines). They are especially interested in writing and art that explores the impact of human or cultural migration, whether voluntary or forced, like themes of immigration, Diaspora, and anti-colonialism. They also accept art. Non-fiction is closed indefinitely.

Lightspeed
Lightspeed is an award-winning magazine, and it is currently open to flash fiction submissions only, of science fiction and fantasy stories. Their website says the deadline may be extended.

Boulevard
­While they frequently publish writers with previous credits, they are very interested in less experienced or unpublished writers with exceptional promise.­­­­ They publish fiction, poetry (no light verse), and non-fiction (both personal essays and researched). They do not accept science fiction, erotica, westerns, horror, romance, or children’s stories. Online submissions are charged, but there is no fee for mailed submissions.

Length: Up to 8,000 words for prose, up to five poems

Dark Recess Press Magazine
This is the quarterly print magazine of Dark Recess Press (they also have a webzine, and stories for this pay up to $25) and they accept horror/dark fiction. For the print magazine, they read through the year, with deadlines for each quarter’s issues. They are reading until 15 May 2022 for the Summer issue. They also accept non-fiction (query first for non-fiction).

This is an app-based magazine. Apart from the word count, they say, “Please ensure your submission is suitable for a wide audience.” Submissions to Live Novel (open-world, interactive novels) are closed.

Three Crows Magazine
This is a magazine of dark and weird fantasy, horror, and sci-fi, with complex characters making morally ambiguous decisions. Stories can be in English, Ukrainian, Polish, Russian, Romanian, or German – they do translations. They also publish artwork.
