10 Fiction Magazines Paying $50 to $1,300

These magazines pay up to approximately $1,300 for fiction. A few also accept other genres, like non-fiction and poetry. They are open now, or will open soon for submissions. Some deadlines are approaching quickly.

The Pig’s Back
This literary magazine opened a short submission window, and closes soon. You can read about them here. They publish fiction and non-fiction by Irish and international writers.
Deadline: 30 April 2025
Length: 2,000-5,000 words

Tractor Beam: The Garden
This is a new magazine and they accept soilpunk stories. “Tractor Beam is a new quarterly speculative and science fiction publication dedicated to soilpunk: radical visions of hopeful futures built from the ground up. Our editorial mandate is to explore audacious and provocative ideas around farming, food, earth science, and beyond, reimagining how humans can live more harmoniously with nature. For our second issue, themed “The Garden”, we’re seeking original written and graphic works set on a future Earth transformed by new approaches to soil. Literal or abstract, near term or on distant horizons: worlds can take inspiration from innovations or alternative practices in earth and material science, regenerative agriculture, food, microbiology, and more. Each story should be a visionary proposal woven into a spectacular plot.”

The Cincinnati Review
They publish fiction, fiction translations, literary non-fiction, poetry, poetry translations, and art for their print magazine. Query for drama submissions. They also have a weekly online Flash feature called miCRo. See their editors’ preferences. They accept online submissions only, except from writers with disabilities or those who are incarcerated. They will open for print submissions on 1st May, and will accept submissions until a cap is reached. miCRo submissions will also open on 1st May and are open for most of the year (see guidelines).

Length: Fiction up to 40 pages, non-fiction up to 20 pages, and up to 5 poems for print
Pay: $25/page for prose in the journal, $30/page for poetry, $25 for miCRo contributions

Cosmic Roots & Eldritch Shores
They will open soon for their regular submission window. They accept fiction, non-fiction, and poetry. For fiction, they want science fiction, fantasy, myth, legend, fairy tales, and eldritch, in written, podcast, video, and/or graphic story form. They accept both serious and humorous work. Also see guidelines for the kind of work they’re looking for, hard sells, and what they do not want. They also accept reprints. Their submission period is the 1st-2nd of every month (see guidelines). Their submission manager will open during the reading period.
Reading period: 1-2 May 2025
Length: Anywhere from 1,000 words and up for fiction (see guidelines); poetry up to 40 lines
Pay: $0.08/word for fiction, $0.02-0.08/word for non-fiction, $1/line for poetry

The Fabulist
This is a magazine of fantastical and speculative fiction. “We define speculative and fantastical fiction expansively; surprise us! We do love science fiction, fantasy, intelligent horror, speculative fiction, literary fabulism, magic realism, mythic/folkloric works, near-future speculations, solarpunk/cli-fi, hopepunk, and genre subversions (crime, mystery, romance, westerns, thrillers, sea adventures, gothic, and quasi-realist works) that are anchored by some element of the fantastic.” Regarding their reading period, “We are opening a new, regular open call for fantastical and speculative FLASH FICTION (up to 1,000 words) every first Tuesday and Wednesday of the month. Each open call will be capped at 100 manuscripts.” Their next submission window is in May; they’ve given the open submission periods for flash fiction on their website. They also occasionally open for short fiction submissions. Their Submittable will open during the reading period. 
Reading period: Opens 6th May, closes 7th May 2025 or when the cap is reached for flash fiction (see guidelines)

The Stinging Fly: Climate Crisis
This Ireland-based magazine will soon open for fiction, including graphic fiction, and poetry. For this Winter 2025-26 issue (to be published November), they will only read submissions on the climate crisis theme – see theme details here. Do not send non-fiction during this window. They also accept translations. They also have a submission FAQ page. Their Submittable portal will open during the submission window.
Reading period: 1st to 15th May 2025 for fiction and poetry
Length: One fiction piece; up to three poems
Pay: Fiction: €45 per magazine page, with a minimum/maximum payment of €325/€1200; flash fiction (1 – 2 pages): €150; Poetry: €45 per magazine page, but with a minimum payment of €70 per poem; Featured poet: €425

Three-Lobed Burning Eye
This speculative fiction magazine will soon open for fiction submissions. They want speculative fiction: including horror, dark fantasy, and science fiction. They also accept translations. Their Moksha submission portal will open during the reading period.
Reading period: 1st-15th May 2025
Length: 500-1,499 words for flash, 1,500-7,499 for short fiction

Escape Artists: Escape Pod
Escape Pod is an online magazine and podcast for science fiction. “We are fairly flexible on what counts as science (superheroes! steampunk! space opera! time travel!) and are interested in exploring the range of the genre. We want stories that center science, technology, future projections, and/or alternate history, and how any or all of these things impact individuals and society.
Escape Pod leans in the direction of escapism, hopepunk and optimism rather than grimdark and gloom.” They also accept translations. They’re currently also open for novelette reprints (see here)

Length: 1,500-6,000 words for original stories, 1,500 – 7,500 words for sort story reprints; and 7500 to 18,000 words for novelette reprints

Book Worms Horror Zine: Cryptid Horror

This US-based magazine accepts mailed submissions only; submissions must be received by the deadline. They are accepting submissions on the Cryptid Horror theme for their 8th issue. “Whether it’s beasts from local legend or psychological horrors born from the depths of your own personal wilderness, we want your weirdest, wildest, and most chilling creations.”
Deadline: 31 May 2025
Length: Up to 1,500 words for prose
Pay: $0.08/word for stories and essays, $25-50 for poetry

SUSPECT: Of the Sea
SUSPECT is the project of NYC-based Singapore Unbound, and they accept work from people of Asian heritage. They are now reading submissions for their special fiction (including flash) and poetry folio, and the theme is ‘Of the Sea’. “This August, SUSPECT will publish a special portfolio dedicated to indigenous perspectives on the region designated as maritime Southeast Asia. We invite the submission of fiction and poetry that explore the manifold effects of the sea on individuals and communities. We are particularly interested in indigenous voices but we welcome non-indigenous authors who have engaged in a significant and sustained manner with maritime Southeast Asian communities.”
