10 Calls for Pitches Directly from Editors & Publishers ($1 Per Word)

Here’s a list of ten recent calls for pitches and/or submissions directly from editors and publishers.

You’ll note that many of these publications pay relatively well. Some pay $500 per article, others pay $1 per word. We’ve listed the payment rates, when available, as well as the linked to the editor’s contact information.

Rewire is a nonprofit publication that delivers thought-provoking content that inspires young adults to make their lives better. Their editor is looking for pitches on love and relationships. Rates start at $250. For details, refer to their editor’s Tweet and this page.

OneZero is a Medium publication about technology and science. Their executive editor has tweeted, “OneZero wants your big, ambitious feature pitches! The Face is a British magazine that covers style, music, TV, film, fashion, culture, and more. Their editor has tweeted, “Northern writers, reveal yourselves… Looking for pitches in lively and incisive prose to pitches@theface.com. Previous experience is not essential.” According to payment reports, they pay £150 to £500 for features. Read their editor’s Tweet here and learn more about them here.

Promised Land Magazine covers art, fashion, and culture. They are currently seeking “Black writers well-versed in subjects of fashion, beauty, culture, lifestyle, fitness, and art. The News Station is a national alt-weekly that covers the war on drugs, prison and criminal justice reform, CBD, the opioid crisis, the innovations in health and wellness, culture, politics, and more. Their managing editor is accepting pitches. Regarding the rates, their managing editor tweeted: “my interns get $75 for short pieces explaining new science/research, then about $150 for a researched news piece or $200 for features; then we’ll usually be $250 for day of, non-breaking news pieces, and as much as $500 though usually around $300 to $400 for features.” If interested, send your pitches to mlaslo@thenewsstation.com. Rest of World is an international nonprofit journalism organization that is focused on “the impact of technology beyond the Western bubble.” Their senior editor is accepting story pitches. Lacuna Voices is a UK-based digital space that showcases beautiful, worthy true-life features. They have tweeted, “We’re looking for some uplifting first-person pieces across Lacuna Voices. Do you know someone with a heartwarming tale? A love story? A reunion of some sort? Animals changing lives? A positive health story? Something amazing with your business? Your unusual hobby? Science for the People is a magazine and website dedicated to “building and promoting social movements and political struggles around progressive and radical perspectives on science and society.” They are accepting pitches for their Spring 2021 issue, “Racial Capitalism in the Age of Conflict, Contagion, and Climate Change.” They pay $100 for short pieces (600 to 1,000 words) which are often published via SftP Online. They pay $200 for slightly longer pieces like reviews, columns, and other articles of 1,200 to 1,500 words, and $250 for feature-length stories of 2,000 words and above. Deadline: November 25th, 2020

ILY is an online magazine about love. They are looking for pitches “centered around news or timely conversations on dating & love.” “Format can range from guides, interviews, profiles, roundtable discussions, analysis pieces & essays. KUOW is “the Puget Sound region’s #1 radio station for news.” They are seeking bold essays on life and resilience for Seattle Story Project. Writers do not have to be currently based in Seattle, but they should be “linked to Seattle or the greater Puget Sound region in some meaningful way.” They are especially interested in hearing from writers who are underrepresented in the media. They will pay $450 for original essays and $200 for previously shared stories. The length of the essays should be 800 to 1,200 words. They read submissions on a rolling basis.
