Freelance Writing as a Part-Time Job: What You Need to Know

It really isn’t easy to find a respectable part-time job these days. It seems like most part-time jobs are geared toward less skilled or even unskilled workers, and if you have a particular knack for producing written content, articles, and more, you will absolutely want to put that talent to use. Freelance writing is an excellent part-time job opportunity, but there are some things you will need to know.

Controlling Your Schedule. As a freelance writer, you have complete control over your work schedule. However, your schedule will be dependent on your ability to find work, too. So there may be times when you have work offered that you don’t have time to work on, and there may be times when you have time to work but don’t have a project to work on. For most freelance writers, the flexibility in schedule allows them time to work at their full-time job, tend to family needs, and take care of other responsibilities in their life. The part-time work from freelance writing is generally extra income, and so this ability to controlĀ  your schedule is a real plus.

Choosing Your Own Hours. Perhaps the best thing about working as a part-time freelance writer is that you have complete control over your work hours. Your schedule, as mentioned above, will be dictated by the projects that you choose to work on. However, when you work on these projects will be up to you. Consider that you have a project that is due in a week and will take up three hours of your time. You can complete that work right away, or you can work on it in half-hour blocks of time every day until the due date rolls around. More than that, you can work at 5am, 10pm, or any other time of the day or night that works best for you. Generally, your clients won’t care when you work provided that you get the job done on time.

Finding Steady Work. If your schedule permits, you can often find a client or two who want you to do regular work for them, such as writing a few blog posts per month, keeping their website updated with fresh content, or writing a monthly newsletter. Such assignments may take you just a few hours per week or even per month to complete, and so you can control your work load and enjoy steady income when you find such clients to work with.

Working on One-Off Projects. There are also plenty of projects that you can work on as one-off assignments. For those part-time freelance writers who don’t want to commit to working so many hours per week or month, these one-off projects are a great way to pick up some extra cash here and there. You can pick up an assignment that may take you a few evenings to complete or that you can work on over a weekend around your regular job and earn a few hundred extra bucks in the process that month.

Because of the incredible number of job opportunities available to freelance writers today, you can almost certainly find one-off projects and steady clients alike who will fit your unique writing talents and your time availability, too. You simply need to spend some time exploring the options available today and get started on this fun part-time job!
