Before contacting any of these publications, please carefully study their website, as well as their call for pitches, and make sure that you are sending a highly relevant pitch. If you’re relatively new to pitching, or want to improve your pitching ability, please watch this free lecture.

Science for the People (SftP) is a magazine and website dedicated to “building and promoting social movements and political struggles around progressive and radical perspectives on science and society.” They are accepting proposals in English or Spanish for their Winter 2021 issue, “Cooperation: Theory and Practice for the Commons.” They pay $250 for feature-length stories of 2,000 words and above; $200 for shorter features, reviews, columns, and other articles of 1,200 to 1,500 words; $100 for short pieces of 600 to 1,000 words and interviews; and $50 for poems. Inverse covers science, innovation, entertainment, gaming, and the mind and body. Their deputy editor is seeking a POC freelance journalist in Arkansas for an interview with a political figure. Anti-Racism Daily is continuing to seek submissions from BIPOC writers on “perspectives on race and racism. U.S. based, $300 paid upon publication (700-800 words).” To learn more, read their Tweet, as well as their submission guidelines.

Fortune is a business publication. Their sustainability editor has tweeted, “I’m looking for pitches for Fortune’s sustainability report about NEW MARKETS emerging in the ESG space. Esp looking for writers with a finance background (green bonds, crypto, etc).” According to one payment report, they paid $1,000 for a 1,500-word news analysis. Art UK is the online home of the United Kingdom’s public art collections. Their aim is to tell stories behind the UK’s art. They publish “stories about broader themes in art history, artworks, artists and collections represented on the site – as well as interviews with artists and museum professionals.” Anyone is welcome to pitch but they especially encourage pitches from writers from marginalized backgrounds. The New Arab is a news website covering the Middle East, North Africa and beyond. They are “welcoming pitches for investigative pieces tackling issues from government corruption and state snooping in MENA to serious crime and terrorism.” According to one payment report, they paid $180 for a piece of around 800 to 1,000 words. The Washington Post is seeking freelance journalists for their Climate Solutions vertical. They need “writers that can bring a conversational tone to climate topics & have creative ideas for solutions-based journalism.” According to one payment report, they paid $500 for a feature. DigitalOcean provides “the easiest cloud platform to deploy, manage, and scale applications of any size.” They are looking to publish tutorials by content creators who are into security and django. They typically pay $300 per tutorial. For details, refer to this Tweet and this page.

The Inspired Source is a solutions-focused opinion piece series by EachOther (a UK-based human rights project). If you have “anything to say about how venue inaccessibility has impacted your life,” then send your pitches to editorial@eachother.org.uk. They will pay £50 per piece (400 to 600 words). Yes! Magazine is an independent and nonpartisan publisher of solutions journalism. They are seeking pitches for their winter 2022 issue: A New Social Justice Movement. SevenSix Agency is “a London-based influencer marketing and talent management agency dedicated to diversity and inclusion.” They are looking for talented freelance writers to contribute articles (on inclusivity and the influencer marketing industry) to their blog. Euronews Next is a future-focused website covering innovation, science, and technology from a European perspective. As part of their mobility week during September, they are looking for “original stories about the future of personal and public transport.” They are not looking for air or space travel stories. TripSavvy is a travel website. They are accepting pitches for their “September digital package on food & drink travel.” They will pay $200 to $450 per story. Darklight Art is “an online space selling affordable small edition fine art prints by some of the world’s most exciting photographers and visual artists.” They are seeking freelance art writers to join their team. Episodes is a newsletter about “TV, film, trans stuff, fiction, and other oddities.” They are looking for pitches on pop culture topics from BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ writers. Thrillist is a website that covers food, drinks, travel, and more. Their local editor for LA, San Diego, Vegas, and SF is always accepting pitches from writers (especially BIPOC and other underrepresented voices) in those markets. At the moment, she is especially looking for Black and POC writers based in the Bay Area. She is looking for food and drink, travel, and trend stories/feature profiles pitches. Rate is $200 to $400. Scouted is a shopping and product recommendations vertical from the Daily Beast. Their commerce director has tweeted, “Do you have a product in your life that has been the ultimate life hack? I want to know about it! Looking for pitches and just all around creative ideas for Scouted.” They pay $100 for recommendations (about 300 words) and $200 to $250 for longer researched topics or expert interview roundups (500 to 800+ words). Glamour is an online magazine for women. Their acting website director is looking to expand her pool of freelance writers. She is also currently looking to commission a piece on “why hostility is not a flirting tactic.” They pay £200 for about 700 to 1,000 words.
