Momus is an art publication and podcast that stresses “a return to art criticism.” Their associate editor is accepting pitches on a rolling basis. They pay around $400 for 600 to 1,200-word reviews or 1,500 to 2,000-word features. If interested, email your pitches to rahelaima@momus.ca and cc pitches@momus.ca. Jewish Currents is a print and digital magazine that is “committed to the rich tradition of thought, activism, and culture of the Jewish left.” They are seeking pitches for their “Fall 2021 themed issue, which will focus on Soviet Jewish experiences both in the Soviet Jewish diaspora and in the former Soviet Union.” They are seeking “reported features, investigative pieces, profiles, conversations, and essays.” They are also seeking tips, relevant book reviews, criticism, creative nonfiction, fiction, and poetry. Life & Thyme is a print magazine and website that specializes in culinary storytelling and food journalism. They are seeking “stories that use grains as an entryway to a larger story.” “Think food apartheid, indigenous grains, environmental issues around grain production, workers rights & unionization, penal labor, etc.” They are mainly seeking reported stories. Yes! Magazine is an independent and nonpartisan publisher of solutions journalism. They are accepting pitches for their Fall 2021 issue which will explore the question: “What is enough?” “To different people, ‘enough’ can have entirely different meanings—from our financial wherewithal and our position in society to how we feel about ourselves, our happiness, our joy, to what right we think we have to exploit Earth’s resources.” Their base rate for reported articles is $0.50 per word. The Monitor is a bimonthly policy and current affairs magazine by CCPA (Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives). They are accepting pitches for their July/August 2021 issue which will focus on media democracy and misinformation. They pay “$300 for short articles (700 words), $500 for 1,500 words, and up to $800 for feature length stories (depending on length).” To learn more, refer to their Tweet and call for submissions.

Business Insider is a website that covers business, financial, and technology news. Their commissioning editor is looking for story pitches about “finance – what’s happening in hedge funds, private equity, and the big banks?” Payment reports indicate that they pay up to $0.35 per word. The Verge is a website that covers “the ways that technology and science are changing the way we live.” Their newly appointed entertainment editor is seeking story pitches about games, film, TV, and comics. They usually pay a flat rate of $750 per reported story (1,500 to 2,000 words). Pitches should be sent to andrew.webster@theverge.com. ChemMatters is a high school chemistry magazine by the American Chemical Society. They have tweeted, “Are you a chemistry teacher who loves to write? Or a writer who loves chemistry? We’re expanding our pool of experienced writers.” Their rates start at $1 per word. For more information, refer to their Tweet and form.

Real Simple is a magazine and website that makes life easier by providing smart and realistic solutions. They are looking to ramp up their “not-your-mama’s retirement coverage.” If you have a “story/source with a unique real-life retirement story folks can learn from” or “specific tips for millennials/Gen Z”, then send your pitches to aedelman@meredith.com. The News Station is a national alt-weekly that covers the war on drugs, prison and criminal justice reform, CBD, the innovations in health and wellness, culture, politics, and more. They are looking for quirky stories. Regarding their rates, their managing editor tweeted: “My interns get $75 for short pieces explaining new science/research, then about $150 for a researched news piece or $200 for features; then we’ll usually be $250 for day of, non-breaking news pieces, and as much as $500 though usually around $300 to $400 for features.” If interested, email your pitches to mlaslo@thenewsstation.com. The Guardian is a British news and media website. Their environment deputy is seeking stories about the environment. She wants to hear stories about the impact of our species on the environment. Splice Blog features stories, tips, tutorials, and insights from the music industry and beyond. They have “a paid contributing writer opportunity for pieces related to making music, the music industry, and maybe some cultural commentary.” They are “largely interested in hearing from women, non-binary, and BIPOC writers” but are open to all. Highsnobiety is a blog, website, and magazine that covers stories and trends in design, fashion, music, art, and culture. Their style editor is seeking “product/trend-focused freelance pitches on style and grooming (hair/skincare).” Rates start at around $250. Chicago Reader is Chicago’s largest weekly newspaper. Their culture editor is always accepting Chicago-related arts and culture pitches (reported features, criticism, profiles, etc.).
