Here’s our latest weekly roundup of opportunities for writers, directly from editors and publishers.

This is a list of 17 such opportunities, covering a very wide range of topics, as well as pay.

We’ve included payment information, and editorial contact information with all of these listings. You’ll note that many of these editors are offering $1 per word, and sometimes more. Keep in mind that you may need to negotiate pay, as these rates are not set in stone.

Rest of World is a new international nonprofit journalism organization that is focused on “the impact of technology beyond the Western bubble.” Their newly appointed South Asia and Middle East editor is looking for pitches, especially from local writers. Epic publishes extraordinary true stories. They publish stories that “tap into the thrill of being alive.” Their deputy editor is always accepting pitches for longform, narrative, reported pieces. Most of their stories are at least 5,000 to 6,000 words. They generally pay $1 to $2 per word. If interested, send your pitches to gina@epicmagazine.com. Wine Enthusiast Magazine is a wine magazine that features wine ratings, reviews, recipe ideas, pairing information, news, and guides. Their associate managing editor of print has tweeted, “I’m looking for pitches. I want pieces that are deeply reported and tap into intersections between wine and culture/science/labor/hospitality. These are NOT trend, service or pandemic pieces. Less about the wine, more about how it’s made and gets into people’s glasses.” She is not seeking pieces that focus on a single business/individual. She prefers pitches on the shorter side. Pitches should be sent to lschlack@wineenthusiast.net. Pay is $1/word for these pieces (about 1,500 words). Lux is a socialist feminist magazine for the masses. They are seeking pitches especially from Black writers. They are interested in “youth organizing, mutual aid, climate crisis, speculative design, how cities should be, video games”, but are open to more. Economic Hardship Reporting Project (EHRP) is a nonprofit organization that produces compelling journalism about income inequality and poverty in America. Their guest editor is “interested in first person pieces about economic hardship across a range of topics including but not limited to religion, immigration, education, parenting/families, race, health, maternal health, culture, housing, agriculture/food, work, etc.” She wants stories that focus on the US. She is particularly interested in stories from journos/writers in the Midwest and South. Pay is about $1 per word. Send your pitches or completed pieces to deborahjlee@gmail.com. How to Love Comics is a website that helps new comic book readers through reading recommendations, tips, lists, and other content. They are looking for pitches for their “Wonder Woman, Fantastic Four, and Archie celebrations.” They are looking for a wide range of writers. They will pay $50 AUD. Insider is a global news publication. Their commissioning editor has tweeted, “I’m always looking for pitches on work, money, and careers. The type of articles that give readers actionable information about their lives and jobs.” According to payment reports, they pay up to $0.35 per word. Email your pitches to jsommers@insider.com. Opportunity for writers who want to “cover the topic of a) parenting in the pandemic and b) neurodivergence and working from home.” They want chapters (1,000-1,500 words) on “what we have learned in regards to equity, accessibility + justice in the pandemic.” They will pay 75c per word (CAD). Task & Purpose is a website that provides “news, culture, and analysis by and for the military community.” They are looking for gear and tech writers for their Reviews section. They will pay $1,500 to $2,000 per month for 10 to 15 buying guides and occasionally informational content guides. If interested, contact jared@taskandpurpose.com. PsychCentral.com is a source for mental health information. They are seeking freelance writers to create empathetic and evidence-based mental health content. They generally pay $150 to $300 per article (800 to 1,500 words). For more information, refer to this Tweet and this page.

gal-dem is a British online and print magazine that is dedicated to sharing the stories of women and non-binary people of color. They are seeking pitches for their upcoming series, Forgotten Diasporas. They are “looking to tell the forgotten histories of diaspora communities all around the world! Ideally, from the people who belong to these communities.” The series will consist of 6 long-reads that will explore “how movement has always been a part of human history by focusing on the trials and tribulations of diaspora communities.” They usually pay £80 to £150 per piece. Opportunity for “5e system writers who love music to pitch a one-shot adventure based on an album that they think would become an amazing gaming experience.” Payment will be $300 ($0.06/word for 5,000 words). Washington FAMILY Magazine is a go-to resource for D.C. area parents. They are seeking writers who are interested in covering parenting topics. Familiarity with the DC metro will be a plus. i-D is a fashion and style publication by Vice Media. Their contributing editor is looking for pitches from “a wide range of relevant voices, but particularly those who don’t get a bigger chance in major/tabloid media.” They are interested in “‘low brow’ pop culture takes w/ strong tension and multiple voices, anniversary pieces and oral histories of iconique albums + movies with a singular angle, anything setting TikTok on fire.” They are not interested in profiles unless you have unique access. They are also interested in “gay stuff with a strong story behind it.” For features that are list-based or op-eds (not commissioned very often), they pay £150. LondonFuse is an organization that promotes arts, music, culture, and lifestyle in London, ON. They are accepting pitches from Canada-based writers for articles on arts, culture, social justice, food, drink, and more. They are seeking articles with evergreen appeal, which are not tied to a particular event. They are “particularly interested in articles that are written by and/or highlight the livelihoods and experiences of people in communities that mainstream media/policy/etc., overlook – Black, Indigenous, LGBTQ+, disabled, or other communities outside of the white straight cisgender demographic.” They pay $175 per article (600 to 1,200 words).
